"Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
He said: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.' "
~ Matthew 5.1-3

Martin Lloyd-Jones described the Beatitudes as something like a picture of the Christian person in his or her "essential features and characteristics." R. T. France suggested that they are "an easily memorable unit of teaching, a pocket guide to life in the kingdom of heaven." This Sunday we will will turn our gaze once again to the picture that Jesus' paints of his upside-down kingdom, giving our attention to this pocket guide to life in God's kingdom. Tomorrow morning we will hear (once again) Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5.1-12. I encourage you to read and reflect on the passage again prior to our time together tomorrow morning. If you have been working on memorizing the Beatitudes (especially verses 3 through 10), I encourage to continue in that endeavor!

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

That we might better pray for one another and God's world:

We pray for Harry and Marilyn Myers as they make their final preparations for their move to Michigan.
We pray for Annette Vernon during all her travels and for the Huizinga family as they celebrate together during her visit.
We pray for ongoing healing and recovery for  Judy Zwierzynski, Beth Blake, Peter DeYoung, and Claire Krempel.

We pray for the ongoing needs of friends and family of Valley members: we give thanks and praise for the report that the Myers' niece Kristine is free of cancer; for Janet Crawford's friend Lori as she recovers from bronchitis which is complicated by lung issues; for continued healing for Pat Aukema's brother, Bill; for peace for the Monroes' extended family in Colorado; for continued healing for David Derzanovich's brother-in-law, Tim; for the de Jager's friend, Bill, who was diagnosed with kidney cancer; for Lor's neighbor who continues her cancer treatments; for Becky's friend Joe who is battling colon cancer; for Adam Derzanovich; for Lynda Huizinga's niece Alexis; for Alistair Krempel; for Mike Corgan's nephew who is battling heroin addiction.
