mark - who is jesus poster updated for 2016
January 22, 2016

"When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid."
Mark 5.15

As he cast out demons, healed fevers and paralysis and other diseases, and calmed mega storms, Jesus has been ushering in God's kingdom and doing battle with "the dark power of evil, threatening to destroy God's good creation, God's people, God's purposes" (Tom Wright). The battle continues this Sunday as we hear Mark's account of Jesus' encounter with the man who was possessed by a legion of demons. The results, in so many ways, are much the same. Mark gives us, in this season of Epiphany, another epiphany, another unveiling of who Jesus really is. I encourage you to read and reflect on Mark 5.1-20 prior to our time together tomorrow morning.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Following the service of worship this Sunday, you are invited to join us for Climate Conversation: Kenya, a short video and conversation about how subsistence farmers in Kenya are being affected by changes in the climate and the unique role the Church has to play on this issue. This is the second week of a four week study, but you are invited to join us at any time even if you miss the other weeks.

Valley Church Service Interest Response Sheets:
In order to help the council be more intentional and organized in fostering a healthy church membership that serves one another and the community, we passed out service interest response sheets at the congregational meeting. These will will help us see how people are pitching in, and how they might want to in the future. If you weren't here, you will find the sheet in your folder. You can also view and print a copy here. We would like for you to return the response sheets by this Sunday, January 24.

Life Choices Center - Change for Life:
There are a few bottles left for Life Choices Center's "Change for Life" fundraising campaign. I encourage you to pick up a bottle on Sunday, fill it up with change (or bills!) and bring it back by February 28. Life Choices Center uses the money for things like this: to explain options to a single mom who just found out she's pregnant; to give a young girl an opportunity to see the life inside her womb; to equip new parents with skills to care for their baby; to encourage teens to set boundaries for healthy relationships; to mentor women who are working through effects from abortions. Every little bit helps Life Choices Center impact mothers and couples to make the choice for life.

Valentine's Day Dinner:
Mark your calendar's for the Valentine's Day Dinner, which is scheduled for Saturday, February 13 at 6:00p.m.

That we might better pray for one another:

We continue to pray for healing and freedom from pain for Ann de Jager following her surgery. We also pray for wisdom for Ann and her doctors as they make decisions about more treatments.

We pray for peace and healing for Cindy Krempel as she awaits more news on her upcoming surgery.
We pray for healing for Sarah Peterson, for her doctors as they determine a course of treatment for her, and for strength for Paul and Erin, too.
We continue to pray for healing, peace, perseverance, and patience for Holly Nelson, and energy and strength for the whole Nelson family.
We rejoice and give thanks for the healthy birth of David Derzanovich's grandson, Cyrus, and pray for strength and energy for Steven and Kate, David's son and daughter-in-law, as they embark on their journey into parenting.

We pray for friends and family: we pray for those grieving the loss of loved ones:
for Lor's extended family, especially her cousin Kevin and his children, as they mourn the death of Kevin's wife, Kelly; for Charlyn's cousin, Carol, and her husband Sal, who are grieving the loss of their only son; for the Rutherford and Yates families; we pray for Mike's nephew who is battling heroin addiction, that a bed would open in a long term rehabilitation center; we pray for healing for David Derzanovich's brother-in-law Tim; for healing and freedom from pain for Adam Derzanovich; for healing and recovery for Becky Stocum's mother; for healing and rehabilitation for Marcus Doller's mother; for Alistair Krempel following an injury at work; we pray for peace for Susan Law's sister's family in the midst of numerous difficulties; we pray for those battling cancer: for Jim and Marsha Conrad's friend Judy, for Marcus Doller's friend Scott, for Tilly Huizinga's client at Catholic Charities, for the DeYoungs' niece/cousin Terri; for the Petersons' friend Pat.
We pray for the shalom of the greater Binghamton area, and for guidance as to specific ways we as individuals and as a church might partner with God as stewards of his reign to cultivate that shalom in the city of our exile.
We pray for God's world: for the refugees fleeing violence around the globe and for governments as they respond to the crises; for those who are persecuted for their faith around the world; for ongoing restoration, renewal, and justice for the people of Haiti; for God's miraculous intervention in the Middle East, that the hearts and minds of the people living there, and that whole cultures, would begin to bend toward peace, and that God's church would continue to proclaim and embody the good news of God's reign boldly there.
