After last year's Taste of Polonia weather, where we saw 90 degrees on Friday, rain on Saturday, a beautiful sunny day on Sunday and frigid cold on Monday we thought we had been through the worst! 2013 proved to be up to the challenge.

The Friday night lineup was one of the best ever with headliners from the U.S. and Poland. Record crowds were expected! Unfortunately Mother Nature did not cooperate. About 7 pm the Festival was hit by the eye of a violent storm with torrential rain and winds clocked at 80 mph at O’Hare Airport.

The mini tornado destroyed 30 tents and ended what was to be a huge kick off to the weekend. Despite the damage the Copernicus crew swung into action removing the damaged tents and the next morning erecting new tents before the gates opened at noon.

Saturday brought much smaller crowds than normal as rain threaten all day. Sunday morning brought more rain which finally ended at 2 pm and our supporters began to trickle in, but our troubles did not end there! About 9pm a large storm cell threatened again. The decision was made to warn the festival goers to be safe. By 9:15pm the grounds were virtually empty AND --- you guessed it! The storm never came.

Finally on Monday we had good weather and the crowds we have come to expect. Attendance was up slightly from 2012 but still much lower than years with good weather. Apparently those that made it were hungry, as food sales, while not records were higher than last year. The special new “Kid’s Zone" for smaller children was a big hit as was the Krakus Kid''''s Stage for a third year in a row. Indeed we were please to see an enormous increase in families with children. Despite all the hardships the Foundation was able to make a profit on the Festival which will be allocated to support its $200,000+ of annual underwriting.

If the weather kept you home but you would still like to support the Copernicus Foundation; we have updated our Membership page & our Donation Button is still available at the bottom of all pages. We truly would appreciate the backing.

See you all next year! Pray for SUNSHINE and thanks for all your support this year.

A First at Copernicus

Dancing-Chopin-Copernicus-Center.jpg?dbfc6cThe Copernicus Foundation is happy to sponsor a special event with live modern ballet, the PASO orchestra, and pianist Igor Lipinski >> Dancing Chopin.  This rare combination of "The Arts" is a first at the Copernicus Center.

AL Dancers, also a non-profit, will only be in Chicago for two days.  Their gifted, classically trained dancers are "filling in" for the Joffrey Ballet. However, Polish born founder & choreographer Agnieszka Laska has agreed to also perform two shows here at the Center; one for the general public, and one for our local schools.

What a wonderful opportunity for our children to be exposed to "The Arts," with ticketing made affordable for families. :)
