Tower of Books

Dear School Parents,

Welcome to the Tower of Books Challenge, an independent summer reading challenge! Students who choose to participate in this challenge will be awarded a Chipotle Reading Rewards Coupon good for a free "Build Your Own Kids Meal at Chipotle" and will be entered into a drawing for a fun literacy-themed basket! Please note that this challenge is an optional, fun and enriching literacy event open to all SFX students.

Here’s how to participate: Identify your child’s incoming grade level Tower of Books Challenge list (find your grade's checklist in the lefthand margin of this letter) Your child’s goal is to read all of the books from the categories listed on that page. He or she will check off one of the boxes each time a book is read. After checking off a box, it’s time for him or her to add to… the Tower of Books!

Here's how to assemble the “Tower Mat:” (1) Print out the "Tower of Book" spines for your child’s reading challenge (either the print in color, or the color yourself file), (2) Cut out a book spine, (3) Fill in the book information, (4) Glue or tape it to the “Tower Mat," and (5) Build your tower of books on the fridge or roll it like a scroll on a long piece of paper! This challenge should encourage children to try some new types of books they may not have read before - all the while having fun keeping track of their reading! The librarians at your local public libraries are great resources to help guide you and your child in identifying books that can help complete this challenge, including 5th-8th grade readers.

PreK-2nd grade students are challenged to follow the instructions above to complete their own Tower of Books - and have fun!

The rising 3rd-4th grade challenge includes an online component. 3rd and 4th graders are asked to read one article from our engaging online database, Scholastic Go! at go.scholastic.com. Enter username "sfxschool" and password "sfxschool." This summer, 3rd-4th graders are asked to read two of the books from the ebook platform, Capstone Interactive, which is widely respected as an excellent ebook platform for K-5 students. The site may be accessed at mycapstonelibrary.com/login/index.html (enter username "summer18" and password "lovetoread") or through the app found on iTunes.

Rising 5th-8th grade students are challenged to read five appropriate books of their choosing (there is no "checklist" for these students). These five books may include required summer reading titles which will be shared in the coming week through our 4th-7th grade blogs and the Newsblast. Upon completion of their challenge, 5th-8th graders will receive a free "Build Your Own Kids Meal at Chipotle" voucher. If they read 10 or more books, they will not only receive their Chipotle voucher but will also be entered into a drawing for a fun Middle School-themed literacy basket or gift card. Middle School students are not required to make a Tower of Books to accompany their reading log submission, but they are most certainly invited to do so.

We are grateful for the parent support that goes into this summer project. From carving out daily reading time to supporting readers with multiple library visits and facilitating fun conversations about books... we understand this is an undertaking that requires the support of your entire family! To thank you for your energy in helping to make this program a success, all parents of participants will be entered into a drawing for a Summer Reading Parent Prize Bag! A winner will be selected at the beginning of the upcoming school year.

Students should turn in their checklists along with their "Towers" at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. Happy stacking!

Sincerely,

Your SFX Literacy and Library Team
