On August 2nd, 10BH families celebrated 473 hours of summer family reading at the Palo Alto Children’s Library. 42 families participated in the nine-week summer reading program, which encouraged parents to continue developing their children’s pre-reading skills over the summer. The event featured fresh fruit, a book and prize giveaway, donated t-shirts, learning games, and a story time circle – just for 10BH learners!

I Feel Indebted to Her
By 10 Books A Home Mom, Clarisa Torres

My son’s experience with 10 Books A Home has been amazing. When my son got accepted to the program, I was very satisfied in knowing that there was a program out in the community who cared about kids’ success.

Uriel and his Role Model LisaMy son’s volunteer [Role Model] comes [to our home] once a week. Lisa is very nice and patient, but most of all, encouraging towards my son. They get along so well. Uriel is always anxious for his next class. At times, I feel indebted to her because she volunteers her time to teach as well as to encourage him to love to read. I am very thankful my volunteer is a part of 10 Books A Home.

Uriel is three years old. It is impressive how my son can write his first and last name already. His first language is Spanish, and he is able to count to 20 in English and Spanish. And, now we keep a routine of reading for at least 30 minutes 6 - 7 days a week (But, Sundays are Uriel’s day off). He is always very proud of himself. He likes to show everyone
Uriel's Name before and after
what he learned during each lesson. He has proven a lot of people wrong, because, yes, he’s small, but he has accomplished a lot.

With love, commitment, and patience my son is succeeding in 10 Books A Home. I am honored that my son is a part of the program.
I have learned that as the parent, I need to help my son in loving reading and learning instead of making it something he needs to do.

Thank you 10 Books A Home!

About Clarisa:
Clarisa and UrielBorn and raised in East Palo Alto, Clarisa recalls the lack of emphasis on education in her own home. “I don’t remember my parents reading to me as a child.” At the age of 20, Clarisa gave birth to Uriel and just three years later discovered 10BH. Clarisa and Uriel have been enrolled for 7 months, and more than ever, Clarisa has realized the importance of supporting her son's love for learning and its long-term benefits. She is confident that with the support of herself, her son’s Role Model, and 10BH, Uriel will succeed in school and life. Today, Clarisa gives back to 10BH by volunteering on the 10BH Mom Committee.
