A Taste of Bikur Cholim for Shabbat

Join us for a spirited davening tonight with our youth at 4:35PM.

Dear Friends,

Rabbi Uri picture

I was in the waiting room at the hospital this week, when I bumped into a familiar face from our Jewish community. "Who are you here visiting, Rabbi?" I was asked.

"Me!" I replied, thinking to myself, "Truly, there is only the sick, and the not yet sick."

This week, I was the sick, and now I'm recovering from a knee arthroscopy to repair a torn meniscus. I told my kids it was the natural result of too many years of stellar basketball and Thanksgiving family football games. The truth lies a little closer to an awkward slip on a wet driveway.

This Shabbat, we read the classic source text for the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim - of visiting the sick. The Talmud (Sotah 14a) teaches that we are commanded "to walk in the ways of the Lord" (Devarim 13:5), and one example of this is to visit the sick, just as we see God visiting Avraham after his circumcision (Bereishit 18).

This mitzvah has become a sobering, yet powerful part of my life as a rabbi. Last week, I had been visiting a couple at the hospital, splitting time between two floors as they were being treated for different, and very serious illnesses. Sadly, the husband succumbed to his condition, and I sat bedside with his sick spouse shortly after, as we "Facetimed" the funeral that was taking place 1,000 miles away.

Then yesterday, I found myself on the receiving end, as I was greeted with phone calls and emails, and visitors at my home who brought food, plants, welcome home signs, music, and just a comforting presence as I sat a bit loopy on Percocet with ice wraps around my knee.

There is the sick, and the not yet sick. And this Shabbat, we are invited to consider the role we are currently filling, and the dual responsibilities of being a holy giver and/or a holy receiver.

Shabbat Shalom.

See you in shul,

Rabbi Uri
