Dear Friends,

Rabbi Uri picture

As we welcome Shabbat and Chag Shavuot, we open our broken hearts to the families of Ido Ben Ari, Ilana Naveh, Mila Mishayev, and Michael Feige, who were murdered in a terrorist attack yesterday inside the open-air Sarona Market in Tel Aviv. More than a dozen others were seriously wounded, including Mr. Ben Ari’s wife. We pray for their recovery, physically and emotionally.

This weekend, we read Megillat Ruth, and the surprising decision by Ruth to radically uproot herself and follow after her mother-in-law Naomi, who has chosen to return to her homeland. The text reads:

“Ruth clung to her. So Naomi said, “See, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and her gods. Go follow your sister-in-law.” But Ruth replied, “Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go.”

One can be inspired by Ruth’s ability to break from her past, and her willingness to imagine a different future. She has the courage to embrace the unknown, and to travel through uncertain waters in order to get there. Ultimately, Ruth’s bold journey is rewarded because of simple acts of kindness and love.

I pray that a new future awaits us in Israel; one that is more forward thinking, rather than solely focused on the past. It will necessitate the imagination of a new narrative, rather than being fixed on claimed historical truths. And if it is highlighted with love and compassion, perhaps then it will become the next Megillah that we read in future days.

May the bereaved families be comforted among all those who mourn in Zion and Jerusalem and may they live to see the answers to our tears and our prayers.

Shabbat Shalom. See you in shul,

Rabbi Uri
