Chanukah Shacharit with Hallel & Torah Reading

A special THANK YOU to the Logan family for doing kitchen cleanup duty for the past 6 months! New volunteers needed for 2017!

Candle Lighting Guidelines:

Tonight, the seventh night of Chanukah, the chanukiyah should be lit 18 minutes before sundown (4:37pm) - just before the Shabbat candles. And since the chanukiyah needs to burn until approximately 6:09pm, at least one of the candles used on Friday should be longer-lasting than the regular "colored candles" (which typically don't burn longer than 30 min total). If you don’t have a special long-lasting candle for this purpose, I would suggest using oil or Shabbat candles.

The last night of Chanukah this year falls out on Motzei Shabbat. There is a debate whether the recitation of Havdalah or the lighting of Chanukah candles takes precedence, but in the absence of a family custom, one should say Havdalah at home first, followed by the Chanukah candle lighting (Shabbat ends at 5:41pm on the last night of Chanukah).

A Taste of Montana for Shabbat

Rabbi Uri picture

Dear Friends,

A group that runs a neo-Nazi website has announced an armed march by white supremacists in an effort to harass and intimidate the Montana Jewish community.

http://www.jta.org/2016/12/25/news-opinion/united-states/neo-nazi-website-calls-for-armed-march-in-montana-town-to-harass-jews-there

In response, our Beltway Vaad has reached out to the Chabad Shaliach of Montana, Rabbi Chaim Bruk.

Rabbi Bruk appreciated our outreach and shared with us that the threats and harassment are very serious issues.  He suggested that we use the light of our Torah and our unity to overcome the darkness of their divisive hate.

We are inspired by his words, and therefore, we are reaching out to our congregations and asking for everyone to provide spiritual support for our brothers and sisters in Montana.

Rabbi Bruk tells us that there are 1500 Jewish families on his Montana mailing list. The neo-Nazis are publishing the names addresses of Jewish families in an effort to scare the Jews into leaving Montana.

In response, we are inviting people to sponsor a Chumash which we will work with Rabbi Bruk and deliver to these families.

Sponsor a Chumash for $40 either by donating through our synagogue, or clicking here, and selecting "Montana Chumash Project."

Our goal is to sponsor 1500 Chumashim by the 10th of Tevet (Sunday, January 8). Let's shine the light!

Shabbat Shalom, Happy Chanukah, and Happy New Year!

See you in shul!

Rabbi Uri

On Sunday January 8, at 10:30am, meet at the first floor of Target (5700 Bou Avenue in Montrose Crossing shopping center) by the front registers. We will pair up into teams and go on a scavenger hunt. You will need to bring: camera w/ phone and $18 IN CASH per family to purchase items for A Wider Circle.

Carmiya to begin maternity leave
Carmiya Weinraub plans to begin a 3 month maternity leave when there's a new Weinraub (with the help of God, within the next month, most likely!). Lily Landau will be taking over for many of the youth director roles. However we are still seeking a few replacement teachers for the following classes: K-2, 3-4, Tot Kabbalat, and Sunday Funday. Lesson plans have already been written. Please be in touch with Carmiya at youth@bethjoshua.org if you can volunteer once a month for 3 months in this capacity.
