SENIOR DUES

Class of 2017! Welcome to an epic year! Congratulations to all of you for making it this far. Let’s not lose sight now that there is still work to be done. Be mindful of your attendance, check in with your guidance counselors to make sure you’re meeting all graduation requirements, and review this very important information

Westhill offers a “Senior Dues Package” to cover ALL Senior year expenses (except Prom tickets, which will go on sale in late April). This packageeliminates the need to pay for the following items separately – and at greater cost – over the course of an already-hectic year:

Dues are payable now by bringing the completed form AND payment to Mrs. Grant or Ms. Tobin as indicated under item 8 on the form.Dues will ALSO be accepted DURING Open House on Wednesday, October 19. Come to our table in the MEDIA CENTER starting at 6pm until the end of the evening.

SENIORS - FINANCIAL AID

Financial Aid sign-ups to help you with the

 FAFSA form have begun!

Just sign up on NAVIANCE under college visits.

Please be reminded that YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROCEED WITH YOUR APPOINTMENT if you do not stop by your counselor's office to pick up the necessary paperwork.

See your counselor ASAP to sign up!

As you are now aware, seniors and their families can begin to complete the FAFSA for Fall 2017 beginning October 1.  Families will use their 2015 federal income taxes when completing the FAFSA – the same tax returns families used to file for financial aid last season.

CHANGES TO THE FAFSA: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW SUMMARY Starting with Academic Year 2017-18, the traditional FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) submission date of January 1 will change to October 1. In addition, families will be able to use tax information from the prior year. The January 1 start date made it difficult for families to get their tax information gathered in time to complete the application. By moving the start date up three months earlier to October 1, students will have more time to fill out this vital information, they’ll have tax information at hand, and families will have more time to evaluate the school’s financial aid award package. WHAT IT MEANS Students enrolling for academic year 2016/2017 will submit a FAFSA beginning January 1, 2016; families should use their 2015 income tax information. Students enrolling for academic year 2017/2018 will submit a FAFSA beginning October 1, 2016; families should again use their 2015 income tax information. Impact: With more time to award financial aid, some schools may choose to adjust their calendar. This could mean changes to the admissions timeline as well as the timing for financial aid award letters and tuition bills. Students should check their colleges of choice to see if any dates or submission deadlines change.

STUDENT HEALTH CENTER
 C.A.R.E.  TEAM

Family Center’s School Based Health Center at Westhill is looking to expand the existing Student Health Research Team to include both research and peer education topics. The result will be the Student Health Center C.A.R.E team which focuses on students being Champions, Advocates,Researchers, and Educators for the Westhill student community.

What is a Student Health Center C.A.R.E. Team?

The Student Health Center C.A.R.E Team is a group of students interested in finding solutions and educating their peers about health topics that are of interest to them. With adult support, team members will work together to identify problems areas, collect, analyze and interpret data and present their findings to shape the future of health interventions and education programs within the SBHC and beyond. The team is entirely student driven; meaning we want to hear what YOU have to say about what happens in YOUR school. Your voice is important to us!

Who are we looking for?

Are you interested in being a Health Center Champion? Are you interested in health research and advocacy?  Are you a natural born leader? Do you enjoy teaching others and serving as a peer educator? Do you enjoy working as part of a team? Then we are looking for YOU!

We are looking to recruit a group of students who have both the desire and commitment needed to carry out this multi-year-long project. The team will meet afterschool from mid-October to mid-May. There will be a late bus available at 3:30pm to assist with transportation, as needed. Any snow days, early dismissals, holidays, etc. will be rescheduled accordingly.

What is in it for you?

As part of the Student Health Center C.A.R.E Team, you will learn valuable skills that you can utilize throughout your high school career and beyond. Some of these skills include:

·         Data collection - learning how to create surveys, conduct focus groups, develop questionnaires, etc.

·         Data Analysis – how do you read data? What does the data actually show?

·         Team Building – learning to work cooperatively with others to achieve a common goal.

·         Public Speaking

·         Writing/Problem solving skills

·         Time Management

·         Advocacy

·         Leadership skills

·         Health Promotion Projects

·         How to be a Peer Educator

Join us for an information session on Thursday, October 20th from 2:15 - 3:00pm

 in the health center.
