Surehatch Breeds Hope for Smallholders in Kenya

Surehatch makes it possible for smallholder farmers to run small poultry businesses with its small-scale, automated egg incubators, which Partnering for Innovation is helping commercialize in Kenya.

Andrew Mwangangi is one such farmer in eastern Kenya. Andrew purchased one of Surehatch's small-scale egg incubators after attending a training organized by Surehatch where he learned about the income potential of small poultry businesses. Two years later, Andrew has a thriving business selling eggs, day-old chicks, and full-grown chickens. The extra income has allowed him to send his daughter to school, a goal the family previously thought was out of reach. Surehatch plans to expand its operations in Kenya and enter markets in Zambia and Malawi, so more farmers like Andrew will have this opportunity to increase their income and improve their standard of living.

Improving Farmer Productivity in Ukraine

Despite being a major exporter of agricultural commodities, Ukraine still faces challenges when it comes to its small- and medium-sized farms. Lack of access to information, technology, and basic equipment hinders these farms' productivity. To address this, Partnering for Innovation is working with Agrobonus to provide access to agricultural analysis and with International Charitable Fund-Community Wellness to improve dairy value chains.

Agrobonus will provide water, soil, and plant analysis both through its main laboratory in Kyiv and through 16 mobile laboratories. International Charitable Fund-Community Wellness will improve Ukraine's dairy value chain by strengthening dairy cooperatives, establishing family farms with heifers and high-quality dairy equipment, and provide cooling tanks for milk storage.
