Bringing Drip Irrigation to Smallholder Farmers

Ninety percent of the world's farmers work on small plots, but drip irrigation - a highly effective form of irrigation - is generally only available to large farmers.

Driptech inc, an international water technologies company, developed easy to install, one- and half- acre drip irrigation kits to address this challenge. With support from Partnering for Innovation, Driptech's InstaKit has now reached more than 1,200 farmers in India. In addition, Driptech has expanded sales to eight countries in the Middle East and Africa, working with 52 local distributors and covering over 10,000 acres with their custom drip irrigation kits.

Improving Agriculture in Mozambique

Through four new public private partnerships in Mozambique, Partnering for Innovation, with USAID/Mozambique, will improve the livelihoods of nearly 48,000 smallholder farmers through a range of products and services.

By partnering with private and public sector organizations that operate across the value chain, Partnering for Innovation will increase the productivity and incomes of farmers through access to financial services, improved seeds, input packages, storage options, equipment and machinery rental, farm business advisers, and technical assistance.

Small-scale Egg Incubators Build Business

Smallholder farmers across Kenya raise chickens for household use, but few are able to produce enough for the commercial poultry market.

Surehatch, working with Partnering for Innovation, is changing that. Surehatch's small-scale incubators have digital controls, are easy to use, and are designed to withstand unreliable energy supplies. Bringing these incubators to the smallholder market will create 250 new small business owners each year, as farmers previously raising chickens at the subsistence level are able to start producing at the commercial level.
