MCPS to Raise Lunch Costs Next Year to Comply with New Federal Regulations

Next year, lunch costs in MCPS will be raised by 5 cents. According to a memo from Superintendent Starr, additional costs will be incurred by federal requirements that students take a fruit at lunch and additional serving sizes of fruit be offered at breakfast, as well as the requirement to move from 51% of grain offerings being whole grain rich (at least 50% whole grain) to 100% of offerings. Prices will not change for breakfast or reduced-priced lunches. While RFKM hopes that this change will not prove to be a hardship for MCPS families, we welcome the positive changes to the nutritional value of MCPS food. We congratulate MCPS on its compliance with federal regulations while some other districts around the country delay these improvements and efforts are underway in the House of Representatives to roll back these positive changes due to industry pressure.

Whole Child Coalition Puts Out Questionnaire for BOE Candidates

The Whole Child Coalition, a group of Montgomery County citizens who work for non-profit and community organizations and local businesses (including Lindsey Parsons, Co-Director of Real Food for Kids - Montgomery) and other community activists interested in educating the whole child, recently sent a questionnaire to all school board candidates covering a wide variety of topics, including school food. Responses from the five candidates who answered can be read at the link above.

All school board races are non-partisan and voting for the at-large seat will take place during the primaries, for which early voting started on June 12 and election day is June 24. All other races for school board will be determined in the general election. There are 4 contested seats on the school board. Please read the questionnaire responses, and go out and vote in this election!
