Shen Wei Dance Arts at Lincoln Center Festival with David Lang and Todd Reynolds For the past few months Todd has been collaborating with dance master Shen Wei and Pultzer-Award-Winning Composer, David Lang to realize music written for Re: III, a premiere piece commissioned by Lincoln Center Festival and subtitled "The New Silk Road". In evening-long events on July 9th, 10th and 11th, Shen Wei Dance Arts fills the stage with bodies that flow like water and music which spans Chinese traditional singing to the urban, raw, industrial passion of David Lang.
This piece has already received critical acclaim at its work-in-progress showing at The American Dance Festival in early June. The Lincoln Center events feature Todd Reynolds as solo performer and musical producer in a live performance of his electronic realization of David Lang's multi-layered score.

Todd Reynolds with Dither Guitar Quartet and Dr. Nerve, July 12th, 7:30 pm, Le Poisson Rouge Todd opens an evening of guitar madness at Le Poisson Rouge featuring Dither Guitar Quartet and downtown veterans, Dr. Nerve.
Featured on this set will be the post-premiere performance of Paula Matthusen's "If I am I or what actually occurred", video by Luke DuBois, new music by Todd Reynolds, an encore performance of Michael Lowenstern's MashUp, and a duet (or duel) between Dr. Nerve's Nick Didkovsky and Todd Reynolds, all loud and amplified, and quite possibly a sneak peak at a new David Lang piece we've been working on.
You might even find all three bands onstage together at some point, but you'll have to come out see how that goes down. Better than Guitar Hero, if you can imagine that.
Doors at 7pm

From Todd directly, The Bali Experience and Bang on a Can. I'm up here in North Adams preparing for the weeks ahead after having just spent two weeks in Ubud, Bali. New York and Bali within the same week, it's pretty much culture shock as you can imagine. They call it paradise for a reason. From the beautiful smell which overcomes you as soon as you breach the airplane door, to the consistent, perfect weather which graced our entire trip, I can't describe one experience which wasn't near heavenly.
We, the cast and crew of "A House in Bali", were brought together by Evan Ziporyn. His first opera, which follows the narrative of Colin McPhee's famous memoir of the same name, is a perfect collision of Western and Balinese music, language, dance and aesthetic.
Marshalling the forces of Gamelan Salukat from Ubud, the Bang on a Can All-Stars from New York, and fabulous opera singers and Balinese actors and dancers, this production goes next to the west coast in the fall. Click on the pics above or the link below to see my own personal photographic take on the trip, and check out performance photos at the official House in Bali Photo Pool.
Next up after this weeks performances, the Bang on a Can Summer Institute here in North Adams, MA at MassMoCA, in our 8th year of bringing together talented composers and performers to write, perform, and experience a shared commitment to the music we love. This years special guest is Steve Reich, and we'll be playing plenty of his greatest hits, I assure you. Add to that The Quartet for the End of Time featuring Vicki Ray, Nick Photinos and Ken Thomson, among many other pieces, and my plate doth overflow.
