Sept. 15 thru Oct. 15, 2007 This month the US celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18.
Latinos are the nation's largest ethnic or race minority.
Celebrate this month by attending local Hispanic Heritage events and fundraisers!
- Viva Las Americas Saturday, September 15, 2007 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM PIER 39 celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Viva Las Americas.
- Fiestas Patrias Sunday, September 18, Annual parade in San Jose celebrating Mexico’s independence. The parade begins at Santa Clara and Market Streets and takes place from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Education is IN for Latinas! Now more than ever, we, savvy mujeres are pursuing higher education, kudos to us! Recognizing the importance of not only personal, but professional growth thru education is crucial. So if it has been a while since you have hit those libros - here are a few reminders and tips to get you started if you been thinking about it!
Here in the Bay Area we are fortunate to be surrounded by excellent educational institutions from City College of San Francisco to SF & SJ State to Stanford etcera, etcera!
- Check out local community colleges - underserved for resources & offerings - community colleges assist with transfers to university programs and obtaining professional/vocational skill building.
- Check out university extended learning programs - State and UC learning institutions both offer short term professional programs in downtown locations. From certified financial planning to project management programs.
- Meet with a school counselor or your mentor consistently to ensure you stay on track and cheer you on! You WILL need moral support.
- Start ONE class at a time. Be realistic. A full course load and other personal/work responsibilities is NOT smart and a guarantee to burn out! Think balance. Think slow and steady.
- TAKE ON financial assistance. Don't let the 'moola' stand in your way! Can't pay out of pocket? Low interest student loans and flexible payment plans are within your reach. Just make sure you apply your new skills with your soon-to-be fabulous promotion for a return on your educational investment!

WHAT TO READ - Lost City Radio by Daniel Alarcon Norma's radio program is the most popular in the country, and every week the Indians in the mountains and poor of the barrios listen as she reads the names of those who have gone missing, those whom the furiously expanding city has swallowed. Loved ones are reunited, and the lost are found.
Stunning, timely, and absolutely mesmerizing, Lost City Radio probes the deepest questions of war and its meaning: from its devastating impact on a society transformed by violence to the emotional scarring each participant, observer, and survivor carries with them for years.
About the author - Daniel Alarcon's fiction and nonfiction have been published in The New Yorker, Harper's, Virginia Quarterly Review, Salon, Eyeshot and elsewhere. He is Associate Editor of Etiqueta Negra, an award-winning monthly magazine based in his native Lima, Peru. His story collection, War by Candlelight, was a finalist for the 2006 PEN/Hemingway Foundation Award, and the British journal Granta recently named him one of the Best Young American Novelists. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship (2001), a Whiting Award (2004), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2007). He lives in Oakland, California, and his first novel Lost City Radio was published in February 2007.
