Latinos have always been tapped into environmental issues, it’s in our “roots” literally - from our ancestors who embedded respect and value for nature to current agricultural issues like pesticides and environmental injustice occurring in low-socio economic urban and rural minority/Latino communities. In addition, environmental initiatives are popping up to further educate immigrants who typically come from countries that don’t endorse environmental sustainability, on the concept of conservation.

A study by the Public Policy Institute of California found that Latinos hold a very strong view of global warming than any other majority and that Latinos have gone into financial hardship with increased gas prices.

So do Latinos have the power to make environmental change within our community, absolutely! It starts with taking conservation steps at home, seeking career positions within the environmental work sector, volunteering and of course, getting politically active and/or joining a local environmental committee!

ImageConservation Tips For The Home:
- Only boil a cup worth of water for your coffee or tea - if you boil a whole pot - recycle the water for your indoor plants

- Turn off the lights - switch off when you are not in a room; same for appliances

- Use ammonia, vinegar and bleach to clean. These ingredients are already found in commerical household cleaners - save a buck and the bottle!
