2. ACUPCC Update

The ACUPCC stands at 578 institutions representing all 50 states – and over 4.7 million students, or 28% of all college students in the United States. Please welcome the three newest signatories, Auburn University, DePauw University, and Illinois State University!

ACUPCC Corporate Sponsor, Honeywell Building Solutions will be hosting a free webinar focused on Clean Air – Cool Planet’s Campus Carbon Calculator. This is a wonderful opportunity for signatories that are in the beginning stages of planning their GHG inventory. This webinar will provide the basics on the most widely used Carbon Calculator tool on University Campuses. Register now to kickoff your climate management process.

Events & Opportunities:

On September 27, 2008 thousands of Americans will join together to call for a new "green economy." This vision includes the creation of green jobs designed to tackle the climate crisis through designing and creating sustainable energy alternatives, local food and transportation systems, and more. Read more about this monumental event here.
  • The ACUPCC is soliciting videos that demonstrate creative strategies for communicating the ACUPCC across your campus and beyond. Communicating goals and strategies with institutional and community stakeholders is a key component in achieving success.
Five selected videos will be highlighted and screened at the 2nd biennial conference of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) November 9-11th in Raleigh, NC. Videos will also be made publicly available on the ACUPCC and AASHE websites, providing exposure for your institutional efforts and sharing creative strategies to build awareness.

Please share this creative and fun opportunity with your greater campus community!

3. Campus Sustainability Day– October 22nd, 2008

The Sixth Campus Sustainability Day (CSD) & Streaming Webcast will take place on October 22nd. Many colleges and universities have been using CSD and the annual SCUP webinar to engage and educate the entire campus community in reviewing sustainability progress since the previous year and to develop plans for the coming year. The timing of CSD in late October, after new students, faculty and staff have settled in, puts it in a good position to generate constructive dialog both on-campus and nationally.

CSD is also a great opportunity for schools that have not yet signed the ACUPCC to do so, and hold a press event.  Please help encourage your members at potential signatory schools to promote this idea and work towards an October 22nd signing event.

SCUP is planning a webcast with The New York Times Knowledge Network. Panelists will include climate change expert Richard Moss, from the World Wildlife Federation, and higher education sustainability expert Anthony D. Cortese of Second Nature. New York Times science editor Andy Revkin will moderate the discussion. Visit SCUP's Campus Sustainability Planning Network webpage for more details on how to register and share your event.

More information regarding CSD is also available on the HEASC website. Here you will find a list of institutions that have participated in CSD, as well as some examples of past events!

6. Newly Formed Sustainability Advisory Panel to Guide NACUBO

How can a chief business officer help lead a college or university toward a more sustainable future? How can a CBO determine what is the best approach for his or her institution? A new Sustainability Advisory Panel (SAP)  has been formed to guide NACUBO's efforts in this quickly evolving area.
