1. HEASC Update

Reminder: The next monthly call will take place on Thursday, April 30 at 1:00 PM Eastern.

Resources:

2. ACUPCC Update

The ACUPCC stands at 623 institutions representing all 50 states – and over 5 million students, or 28% of all college students in the United States.

Save the Date: ACUPCC Annual Summit August 13-14th, 2009-Chicago, IL

Resources:

The ACUPCC and the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), with assistance from 35 industry experts have created a best practices toolkit as a resource for campuses interested in learning about and conducting an Energy Performance Contract (EPC). EPC is a contractual and financing mechanism through which building owners can undertake comprehensive energy efficiency retrofits with minimal financial exposure and maximum energy and financial savings.

3. AASHE Updates

The intent of this wiki is to fill a climate action planning "resource gap" by providing a guide which is much more "how-to" oriented and comprehensive than existing campus greenhouse gas emissions reduction resources. While developed with the support of the ACUPCC, this CAP wiki is intended to be helpful to all colleges and universities with an interest in reducing GHG emissions.

AASHE has launched its Open Space Conference Call Line, on which AASHE members can host discussions on topics related to campus sustainability.  Perhaps you successfully coordinated a residence hall energy conservation competition and want to share best practices with others in the campus sustainability community – don't wait until the next conference – use the AASHE Open Space Conference Call Line!  The best part is - you can record it so that others will have access to the information provided on your call in the form of a podcast.

Ball State University (IN), in partnership with AASHE, announces a Call for Papers for Greening of the Campus VIII: Embracing Change. Abstracts for conference papers, posters, workshops, panels, forums, special activities, and pre- or post-conference events are invited. Topics may range from the practical day-to-day management of the physical plant to green curriculum development and green utilization of campus resources. The deadline for submissions has been extended to April 24, 2009.

4.  NACUBO Publishes Boldly Sustainable: Hope & Opportunity for Higher Education in the Age of Climate Change

Boldly Sustainable examines why sustainability makes sense in tough economic times and offers higher education leaders concepts to enhance organizational effectiveness and promote culture shift on campus.  The book’s authors are Peter Bardaglio, senior fellow at Second Nature, a nonprofit committed to the promotion of sustainability in higher education, and Andrea Putman, director of sustainability financing at Second Nature and a co-manager of the partnership between the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and the Clinton Climate Initiative.

The NCWE is looking for presentation proposals on Going Green - Energy Programs - Curriculum intergration

6. From NWF's Campus Ecology Program comes CampusEdu-News for the Green Campus

has been sending out – a little like the AASHE bulletin, but more in-depth features, as opposed to summary of the stories that are out there.  I’m assuming more of a student / sustainability coordinator audience, but something to keep in http://www.nwf.org/campusecology/climateedu/

7. ACPA Institute on Sustainability

The second annual ACPA Institute on Sustainability will again bring together students, staff and faculty from colleges and universities across the country who are committed to sustainability. Now, more than ever, it is essential to implement sustainable practices that save money and reduce a campus’ carbon footprint. This Institute will provide participants with the tools necessary to help each campus become more sustainable.

The ACPA Institute on Sustainability will seek to create education and awareness around the following topic sessions:

  • Renewable Energies Technologies & Funding
  • Creating Regional Consortiums
  • Green Building and Renovation
  • Integrating Sustainability into the Fabric of Campus
  • Assessing Student Learning
  • Sustainability and Student Activism

Featured Speakers:  Tom Kelly, Ph.D., the first director of the University Office of Sustainability (UOS) and Chief Sustainability Officer at the University of New Hampshire; Simran Sethi,  Environment correspondent for NBC Nightly News and "The Today Show" and the Lacy C. Haynes Professional Chair at the University of Kansas School of Journalism & Mass Communication; and Shanah Trevenna, an amazing student from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

Additional information on the institute’s program, registration and how to submit a “Showcase Program” can be found at:  http://www.myacpa.org/pd/sustainability.
