3. December 1 "Publications Futures Group" Meeting Invitation

APPA and SCUP would like to invite the "publications" folks in your office to a meeting of the Publications Futures Group. This is intended as a futuring, brainstorming, and sharing session among higher education association publications staff about where "publications" are going in 3, 5, and 10 years. It'll be held at the APPA offices in Virginia - an easy Metro ride from downtown DC - and is sponsored by SCUP and APPA. Please share with those who do your "publishing" - whether journals, magazines, books, marketing collateral, or whatever. We plan to begin at about 11:30 with lunch, followed by an afternoon of discussion. Planning for Higher Education executive editor, Tom Longin, will moderate the discussion. RSVP to Terry Calhoun at terry.calhoun@scup.org

4. APPA Webinar October 30, 2008 11:00 AM Eastern

Learning to Lean: Value creation, Improve Staff Morale and Experience the Approach Toward Waste Reduction

Managing and improving complex systems on campus requires continual understanding of what stakeholders value. Lean is a way of thinking that prioritizes customer value and respect for workers while eliminating unnecessary waste from a system. This webinar will help you see how lean thinking and tools can be used to solve problems in a team setting, engage others in seeing the “big picture” to increase their support, and quantify the value your solutions can contribute to your institution. Our “deep dive” is a case study of lean applied to a campus. Faced with the challenge of reducing environmental impact while enhancing student learning, Cape Cod Community College applied lean in an innovative way to a sustainability challenge that cut across their entire community. We’ll answer your questions about how lean could be applied to other challenges on campus, from staff development to strategic planning.
