Press Release: Film shows how helping kids can build a stronger America

Seven Napa agencies are sponsoring a Feb. 3 showing of the film, “The Raising of America,” a compelling documentary explaining how a strong start for children can lead to a stronger and more equitable nation.

The free 5:30 reception, 6:15 movie and 7:15 panel discussion at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center is part of a national response to alarming class and racial inequalities in health. The event is intended by organizers to scrutinize policies that affect parents and caregivers that shape early childhood health and development.

The film was produced by California Newsreel, the oldest, independent non-profit documentary center in the country, and Boston-based Vital Pictures, which creates media projects that explore provocative and timely sociopolitical and economic themes.

The film explains that a child’s early years are a time when public policy interventions and grassroots efforts can have the greatest benefits. Many experts say investments in maternal health and early child development are critical to building a healthier, safer, happier, more equitable and more prosperous nation.

Organizers hope the event will help connect early childhood development to America’s future health and prosperity, and spur the public to support bold, transformational changes which can make a nurturing childhood the birthright of every child in America, and the most prudent investment any nation can make.

The seven local agencies organizing the event include Child Start, Community Resources for Children, COPE Family Center, First 5, Napa Learns, the Napa County Office of Education and the Napa County Department of Public Health.
