 JOHN'S WINE 101"

Malolactic fermentation
The malolactic fermentation, which is a bacterial process, results in conversion of the sharp tasting malic acid to the softer lactic acid. Whether a winemaker permits or blocks the malolactic (or 'malo') depends on the style of wine he/she aims to make. Most red wines, and some whites depending on the style, undergo malolactic fermentation.

SPAIN AND PORTUGAL ON SALE
We are frequently reminded of the value for money offered by Spanish and Portuguese wines. At just about every pricepoint there are superb wines, oftentimes meriting high points rating from Jay Miller of "The Wine Advovate", Wine Spectator, Stephen Tanzer (International wine Cellar) and even our friend Stephen Meuse of "The Boston Globe." Once again we've put the Iberian peninsula on sale. Come on in and see me. I will help you with your selections and even share an insight or two along the way.

Purchase 6 bottles and save 15% or purchase 12 bottles more and save 20% (Spanish and Portuguese wine, 750ml size bottles) non sale items only. Sale runs through March 31st, 2010.

 WINES OF THE MONTH

Bortolomiol Prosecco bortiolomiol.JPG
Late last year I planned on introducing this lovely Prosecco to the store, but somehow overlooked it. Imagine my surprise when recently I attended a special tasting, only to find it at a much reduced price! Needless to say I enthusiastically grabbed every bottle I could buy! This is almost akin to a frothy apple in a bottle with enticing aromas and is fruity without being a bit sweet. Reg $19.99 SALE $14.99

Ramey Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2007
This is a medium bodied Chardonnay with inviting aromas of peach and melon. The wine has an exuberant style that is both balanced and generous with superb minerality. Not to be missed by any true Chardonnay lover. Reg $42.99 Special SALE 34.99

Faustino Crianza 2005
This Crianza typifies what one might call modern style Spanish winemaking. It is made entirely from the Tempranillo grape and is aged in both American and French wood. It is a more fruit forward wine than many of Faustino's other offerings. Notes of strawberry, cherry, vanilla and a well restrained hebaciousness are all beautifully intertwined. Sheer poetry in a bottle!
Reg $15.99  SALE $12.79

Abbaye de Saint Ferme 2005 "Les Vignes du Soir" Bordeaux Superieur
The wine is affectionately named ‘The Night Vines' as the blend comes from the vines planted farthest from the Abbey which receive the last light of day and are hence tended to later in the day and into the night! A blend of mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the wine is aged in oak for six months and exhibits delicious black cherry fruit and hints of chocolate.   Reg $9.99  Sale $7.99

Tres Picos Borsao Garnacha 2008
Year after year this superb Garnacha from Spain notches up the big scores in the wine press with Stephen Tanzer already weighing in with a 91 point rating. Dark purple in color the wine explodes with berries and black fruits. Reminds us al ittle of a top notch northern Rhone. Wow! Reg $15.99 SALE $12.79

Martin Codax ERGO Tempranillo 2007

Greg Maserole from Arborway Imports will mobilize us in a "A" to " Z" Roman Redux Tasting from Alfred Bichot's delicate Bourgogne Blanc of Saint Veran 20'08 to sweet Sicilian Zibibo.  Boldly we will swoop like Roman Centurions from Saint Veran southwestward to the Roman outpost Baux-de-Provence to taste organic Mas de Gourgonnier Cotes de Provence A.O.C. 2006  in Provence.  Pushing eastward toward the Rhone river we encamp on the eastern slope outside of the village Cairanne and sample Domaine de Ameillaud Cairaine Cotes du Rhone Villages A.O.C 2006.  Next we will angle south to quell a Tuscan uprising just north of today's Florence (The Gaul of these plebs calling themselves SupERT(r)USCANS)  and quench Fattoria Bassiano Il Corte ‘ I.G.T. Finally we will retire to our villas in Sicily and dance to Nicosia's Nero D'Avola and sip the sunset of their sweet Zibibo.

So Grab your gutturnium and will reflect on a centurions old saying: Veni, Vidi, Vino!.... I came, I saw, I tasted wine!
