 Los Angeles Based Food, Wine & Travel Writer Chris Rubin Dies at 49
Los Angeles, CA (August 29, 2008) – Food, wine and travel writer Chris Rubin died in the early morning of Friday, August 15, 2008 in Los Angeles due to complications of cancer. He was 49.
The well-respected journalist, Rubin, who had written for The Los Angeles Times, Daily Variety, Robb Report, Travel & Leisure, as well as currently being the LA editor for the Southern California-based Gayot Publications had undergone a liver transplant in June 2006 after being diagnosed with a rare vascular cancer called, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. He chronicled his disease and his marriage to his long-time partner, Deborah Calla, in an article for the Los Angeles Times.
The native Los Angeleno worked briefly in the film industry, writing and adapting screenplays before becoming a full-time journalist. It was until the late 1980’s, that Rubin began writing music, travel and food. His music writing appeared in Rolling Stone and LA Weekly.
Rubin is survived by his wife, Deborah Calla, a film writer-producer; father Stanley, a film writer-producer; mother Kathleen Hughes Rubin, an actress; sister Angie, a music editor; brother John, a documentary filmmaker and brother Michael. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25th which would have been 4 days after Rubin’s 50th birthday.
