The Long View....Living Into the Answer

Dear Friends, Fans & Family....
JD and I will be spending most of the summer singing and playing here in Colorado (except for the weekend of June 17 in Nashville.) Please see our calendar for details.
Creative News: Our dear friends and fellow singer/songwriters, Jami Lula and Gary Lynn Floyd, were just at our house this week, visiting while they did a local concert.  We all jumped at the chance to write a song together. (It's pretty wild with 4 people all chiming in at the same time, but some cool and unusual stuff can show up.)

We got a good musical groove going, and then began casting around for lyrical ideas. What surfaced for all of us (wrapped inside a healthy sense of humor and compassion) was the common experience of Doubt....that familiar feeling of being too hard on ourselves, of second-guessing, of forgetting that we don't always have to push the river.
Even in the best of times, there's a nasty little committee in our heads that can stage a hostile take-over. "Hey, maybe you're not doing any of this right. Maybe you are deluding yourself by thinking that you will ever amount to anything really important. Maybe you are just blundering around not knowing where you're going or how in the hell you are going to get there. You should be Perfect, Right, and Done by now. There are a lot of questions here, and you should have all the answers figured out."

All this could all be a teeny bit depressing, but fortunately we have access to The Internet! It took us no time at all to find this lovely quote from Rainer Maria Rilke, the wise and brilliant Bohemian-Austrian poet who lived from 1875 to 1926. It would seem that these very human doubts are quite universal:

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart, and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue.

Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

Big relief!

We figured Rilke wouldn't mind us being inspired by his ideas. We got a great start on our new tune, and should be able to finish and record it soon.  We will send it out to you when we do.
Until then, thanks again for staying tuned.  Have a beautiful June!

Love from JD & Jan
