deb-portrait.jpg?1358722685Saturday,  March 9, 1-3pm

Deb Lund returns to ABFAS to help us celebrate 21 years of independent bookselling with her latest dinosaur adventure, Dinosauring.
This is a high-rhyming, tummy-tickling, rip-snortingly hilarious tale of dinosaurs flying in an airplane and attempting to do stunts, only to tire of the adventure and seek other, more stable pursuits.

Erika Madden Presentation

ErikaMaddenFriday, March 22,   7-8pm

What happens when the sweet magic of childhood mixes with the grimness of war? Author Erika Madden's childhood experiences in World War II Germany serve as inspiration for her poignant and suspenseful novel, Year of the Angels.

Through the eyes of Lisl, a young German girl, Madden paints vivid images of the ever-present hunger, fear, and quiet desperation that defined village life during wartime Germany. Year of the Angels is a powerful affirmation of the resilience of the human spirit. Its softly written first-hand accounts of historical events are rare gems for any history enthusiast.

The Lost Art of Mixing

FC9780399162114

By Erica Bauermeister

The Lost Art of Mixing is the poignant and often hilarious sequel to The School of Essential Ingredients. Cooking classes brought the characters together in the first book and entwined their stories with one another as effectively as the ingredients they were learning to blend. In this book, new characters are introduced and the resultant mixing of their lives with the original characters gives the reader further insights into their personalities and circumstances. Happily, while neatly answering questions regarding the fate of the characters, the threads of this story also lend themselves to future volumes. The River Swimmer

FC9780802120731

By Jim Harrison

In The River Swimmer the main character, a Midwestern boy named Thad, is in years not yet a man, but in experience triumphantly erotic. He swims great lakes and rivers, has visions of water babies swimming around him beneath the surface, and becomes involved with beautiful, attractive and willing girls his own age, with, as it happens, overbearing and successful fathers who sometimes try to kill him, and sometimes nearly succeed. In his outsized  almost cartoon-like  philosophical ambition, Thad declares "I just want to feel at home on earth ..."

The Orchardist

FC9780062188519

By Amanda Coplin

Now just released in trade paper, The Orchardist, by Wenatchee native Amanda

Coplin

At once intimate and epic, The Orchardist is historical fiction at its best, in the grand literary tradition of William Faulkner, Marilynne Robinson, Michael Ondaatje, Annie Proulx, and Toni Morrison. In her stunningly original and haunting debut novel, Amanda Coplin evokes a powerful sense of place, mixing tenderness and violence as she spins an engrossing tale of a solitary orchardist who provides shelter to two runaway teenage girls in the untamed American West, and the dramatic consequences of his actions.

This Is Not My Hat

By Jon Klassen

When a tiny fish shoots into view wearing a round blue topper (which happens to fit him perfectly), trouble could be following close behind. So it’s a good thing that enormous fish won’t wake up. And even if he does, it’s not like he’ll ever know what happened. . . . Visual humor swims to the fore as the best-selling Jon Klassen follows his breakout debut with another deadpan-funny tale.

The One and Only Ivan
By Katherine Applegate

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.
Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.
