  • The Red Coat - the Investigation Continues

Since our last newsletter in February, our American textile expert, Lynne Bassett, has spent the past few months reviewing a multitude of records, books, papers and letters in an effort to better situate the origin, provenance and authenticity of this significant artifact, the Mulford Red Coat.

Her analysis, of almost forensic precision, gives us a wonderful glimpse into the history of the British textile industry in the 18th century. The final assessment is a surprise.

Little Known Facts - from the Town Crier

From the archives of Hugh King, East Hampton's Town Crier.

The first woman at the Gold Rush is from Sag Harbor!

In the last issue of our newsletter we mentioned strange Mr. Mulford's odyssey across the country at the time of the Gold Rush.

Another one of our local characters earned herself a prominent distinction during the Gold Rush!

Polly Sweet was born in Sag Harbor in 1815 and immediately upon getting married in 1835 convinced her husband that fame and fortune awaited them in California.

Starting out by wagon they traveled to Albany, across New York State to Buffalo and by packet-ship to Chicago. She eventually crossed the Rocky Mountains through Colorado, Utah, Nevada and reached Sutters Fort in California in 1845.

Polly Sweet was the first woman from New York State to cross the Great Plains to the Pacific coast by prairie wagon. When gold was discovered in 1848 in Central California, Polly Sweet became the first American woman at the scene of discovery.
