Dear Friends and Family of Lap SF and the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Hawaii,

Doug's Quiche

ImageThis Quiche was submitted by one of our patients. It is good hot or cold and serves 6-8 people.

3 whole carrots (diced)
2 yellow onions (diced)
1 red onion (diced)
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
3-6 dashes garlic powder
3-6 dashes dill powder
6-8 dashes green tobasco sauce
1 cup fresh spinach (chopped)
4 eggs or 1 cup Egg Substitute
4 tablespoon low-fat sour cream
3/4 cup feta cheese
1/4 cup parmesan cheese

*Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

1. Place diced carrots and onions in microwave safe bowl, cover with saran wrap, cook in microwave for 11 minutes.
2. Add chopped spinach to cooked vegetables.
3. Whip eggs or egg substitute with 1 ounce water, low fat sour cream, tobasco sauce, garlic powder, dill powder, feta and parmesan cheese. Whip with fork or whisk for 2-3 minutes. Add to vegetable mixture.
4. Cook entire mix uncovered in microwave for 3 minutes, 30 seconds then transfer to oven on middle rack and cook for 30 minutes at 300 degrees.
5. Let cool for 1 hour and serve.

What to do when you take a trip

ImageIn planning a trip or vacation, many might experience some anxiety or worry about what and how they are going to eat while away from their usual day to day routine. Vacation sometimes equates to more free time, so therefor less planned meals, more eating out and maybe more desire or pressure from others to splurge. Here are a couple ideas to keep in mind:

1. You may chose to follow the same plan and routine as you would if you were at home. This means you might stock up on foods at the grocery store once you've reached the destination and therefor have the appropriate foods on hand. Plan to have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner meal versus snacking and grazing throughout the day.
2. Consider keeping a food diary while on your trip to help keep you on track.
3. If you know you'll be eating out more or splurging then try to get more exercise in during the day. Plan active days with a lot of walking, biking, or sightseeing.
4. Most importantly, do not let those cheating or splurging habits come home with you! If you have allowed yourself to "get off track" make sure to get right back on track when you get home.

Read the Label

ImageRemember that just because something SOUNDS like a healthier choice, be sure to always look at the total calories, carbohydrates and protein content in the portion size. Here's some helpful information when looking at labels.

If the nutrition label says...

Reduced-fat, Less fat: at least 25% less fat than the product with which it's being compared

Low-fat: no more than 3 grams of fat per serving

Low-calorie: no more than 40 calories per serving

Lite, light: at least one-third less calories, half the fat or half the sodium of the regular product

Fat-free: less than 0.5 grams of fat per serving

Calorie-free: less than 5 calories per serving

Also remember that the term "no sugar added" is not a free ride. There is still sugar in the food by ways of sucrose, fructose, lactose, corn syrup or maltose to name a few. Just remember to look for the total carbohydrates. Within the first year of surgery, most are aiming for under 40 grams of carbohydrate a day.
