Sashimi: A Fully Packed Portion

ImageWhat better source of protein could you ask for other than a fresh piece of fish? If you haven't already, take the time to try Sashimi- thinly sliced pieces of fresh raw seafood, often served alone or dipped in soy sauce. Visit a Japanese restaurant and forgo the sushi made with rice- and find Sashimi on the menu. Better yet, most grocery stores (ie. Safeway and Whole Foods just to name a few) are offering fresh sashimi. This way you can order as little or as much as you'd like. Tuna and salmon are common options. Give it a try!

~ A serving of Yellowfin Tuna Sashimi is about 120 calories and about 27 grams of protein.

Image Appetite Suppressing Foods

Certain foods and fluids, especially those that are fiber rich, can act as appetite suppressants. Here is a list of foods known to suppress appetite and should be a part of your regular diet.

- Green Tea & Water: Drink plenty between meals. Often thirst can be mistaken for hunger. Drink water and or green tea between meals to hydrate and suppress appetite.

- Almonds: Great as a small snack, but watch your portions. The calories can add up quickly!

- Zucchini and Broccoli: Fiber rich vegetables should couple your protein at dinner or lunch.

- Celery: Have as a small snack between meals or include in salads.

- Salads: Go for dark leafy greens but watch for too many high calorie additions such as cheese, nuts, dried fruits, and high calorie dressings.

- Tofu: Don't overlook this source of protein. It can be sauteed or added to soups and salads.

2 Meals in 1: Keeping it Simple

ImageIf your stumped for meal options, sometimes its best to keep it simple. For WLS patients, breakfast is usually a pretty standard protein based meal such as eggs, egg substitute, yogurt, cottage cheese, or a protein shake. Once it comes time for lunch and dinner, try not to run out for meals or grab something from the nearest cafe. Meals from home are always going to be your best option, both smart and healthy.

Start with planning your dinner... what to make? First, pick a protein (fish, chicken, turkey, etc). Second, pick a vegetable (salads, broccoli, grilled vegetables, baked zucchini, etc). Even though portions are going to be smaller in general, make extra at dinner time, pack it up, and bring these leftovers for lunch the next day. Even if you only have an extra breast of chicken leftover, dice it up and throw on top of lettuce for a chicken salad the next day. Not only does this save money, it has created two healthy meals from one. It gets you OUT of the "going out to eat" phase.
