Dear friends & family of LapSF and the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Hawaii, People often ask how to approach traveling after weight loss surgery, especially in regards to food choices and availability Whether its vacationing or going on short business trips, some thinking ahead and pre-planning healthy meals is in order. When you're stuck in the airport, options aren't plentiful but their there! Read the article below for helpful ideas.

Travel Foods Since we can't bring much through airport security, traveling can pose a bit of a challenge when trying to eat healthy. However, with some planning ahead, finding an appropriate and healthy meal or snack is certainly doable.
First of all, avoiding the convenience stores is a good place to start. There is virtually nothing healthy here so veer away from the trail mix, chex mix, candies and chocolates. These are not offering you anything nutritionally. Eat at home before leaving to avoid having to purchase anything at all.
In most airports they have small food kiosks or restaurants. Often they offer yogurts, string cheese, hard boiled eggs, or even some beef/turkey jerky. If you have time for a meal, restaurants will offer a green salad, grilled chicken, grilled fish, or steamed vegetables. Deli counters will give you tuna or deli sliced luncheon meats without the bread. Packing protein powders will always be a safe choice.
Once arriving at you destination, scope out the surroundings and make a trip to the nearest grocery store to pick up other snacks and/or meals. Don't let traveling for business (or pleasure) get in the way of making healthy choices.

Nordicware Microwave Egg Poacher Its always helpful to share what products and cooking ware makes meals easy for those who don't have as much time to cook. After weight loss surgery, portions are small so products aimed at small portioned meals add convenience.
This quick egg poacher has been recommended by a couple of our LapSF patients. It poaches 1-2 eggs in the microwave and is dishwasher safe. Eggs are a good source of protein, so this makes it an easy way to make a quick breakfast meal.

Personal Relationships and Bariatric Surgery After surgery, many patients report changes in their important relationships. You may notice that, as people watch you lose weight, they begin to react differently to you. For example:
- Some people may become jealous of the progress you are making in losing weight. - Others who never talked to you before surgery may begin socializing with you. - Individuals may invite you to more social events. - Members of the opposite sex may notice you more. - People close to you may not want you to succeed. - Why do relationships change? Before surgery, you have equilibrium in your relationships and in your home environment. When you change, it can sometimes upset the balance or homeostasis.
Issues can stem from:
- You and/or your partner’s expectations. - Your increased energy level. - Your enhanced confidence, assertiveness, and self-esteem. - Changes your in appearance.
What you can do: - Start with the idea that surgery will affect those around you. Get everyone involved in the process (meal planning, activities, etc). - Communicate! Communicate! Communicate! Check in with your loved ones every few weeks regarding the changes you are both experiencing. - Provide good information. Encourage support group attendance, have them meet with your doctor, or have them talk to other WLS significant others.
