Dear Friends & Family of LapSF and the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Hawaii,

Which One's Best?

ImageWith so many butters, margarine, spreads and sprays on the market it might be confusing to pick the best one. To keep it simple: Look for one that does not contain partially hydrogenated oil with as little saturated fat as possible.

"I Can''t Believe It''s Not Butter! Fat Free" and "Promise Fat Free" tubs of butter are made without partially hydrogenated oil. Per tablespoon they both contain 5 calories, 0 grams saturated fat, and 0 grams trans fat.

For Cooking/Baking sprays, "I Can''t Believe It''s Not Butter!" has no calories and "PAM" cooking spray has only 10 calories, 0 grams saturated fat and 0 grams trans fat in a 1 second spray.

Use these minimally of course, but the above mentioned brands are going to be your best choice.

A Way To Get Involved

Image"Allergan, Inc. (the makers of Lap-Band) launches a public awareness and advocacy campaign to urge greater attention to critical need for both prevention and treatment to effectively address adult obesity."

More than 70 million Americans are obese (with approximately 15 million of them being 100 pounds or more overweight). The C.H.O.I.C.E. Campaigne (Choosing Health over Obesity Inspiring Change through Empowerment) aims to educate the public that "until the stigma associated with obesity is removed and it is recognized as a complex disease that necessitates a focus on both prevention and treatment, including weight-loss surgery, these startling statistics will continue to rise."

To learn more about joining the cause, please email Amy at RD@lapsf.com.

Honorable Mention!

ImageCongratulations, Sue! She will be returning to her 50th High School Reunion at the same weight she was when she graduated. Sue had the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy 4 years ago this August and has maintained a stable weight!

Are You a People Pleaser?

People Pleasers are those that have trouble saying “NO” to others. As a result, they end up putting everyone else’s needs before their own. This often leaves them last on their own “to do” list particularly when it comes to their own health and self-care.

There are lots of reasons People Pleasers struggle with saying "no." Some feel bound by obligation or by the fear of hurting someone's feelings. Others believe they really can do it all. Other People Pleasers are simply looking for approval in an effort to be liked and accepted by others.

Following WLS, it is important for People Pleasers to make a strong commitment to self-care and learn how to make their own needs a priority. These needs may include time to be alone and to rest, time to exercise, and time to plan healthful meals. People Pleasers must recognize that taking care of oneself is NOT selfish, but is an outgrowth of self-love and wanting to be as healthy as possible.

Participating in self-care also requires assertiveness and the ability to say “no” to others when needed. Being assertive is a healthy trait because it means that you are respecting your own feelings and values as much as you are respecting the feelings and values of others.

For most People Pleasers, saying “no” takes practice and requires pushing past some uncomfortable feelings. Here are four tips for saying NO assertively that don’t include making up an excuse:

1) “I can’t right now.” This allows for the possibility of doing it at another time but is a softer way of saying “no.”

2) “My plate is too full to commit to anything else right now.” This shows that your honor your commitments and most people can relate to this.

3) “I’m not able to but maybe I can help find someone else who can.” You set a boundary while still showing concern.

4) "I don't want to take on what I can't fully commit to doing well." This is a yes to higher standards.

Initially, you might be met with some resistance from people who are confused by the change in you. However, keep focused on what you’re trying to accomplish. You’re not only making personal changes but are modifying the expectations of others around you.

Salmon with Citrus Salsa

ImageThis is a great summertime recipe with only 280 calories per serving, 27 grams of protein, and 12 grams of carbohydrates. Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients:

1 orange
1 lime
1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
1 jalapeno, seeded and minced (optional)
1/4 cup cilantro leaves
2 Tbs. canola oil, divided
2 bell peppers, sliced
1/2 lb. zucchini, sliced
1/2 tsp. salt, divided
freshly ground black pepper
1 lb. wild salmon, cut into 4 pieces

For the Salsa: Segment the orange and lime and cut into quarters. Toss in bowl with onions, jalapeno, and cilantro.

Heat 1 Tbs. of oil in a large non-stick skillet over med-high heat. Saute the peppers and zucchini until well browned (3-5 mins). Season with 1/3 tsp salt and pepper. Remove vegetables and keep warm. Wipe remaining oil out of pan with paper towel.

Heat remaining 1 Tbs. of oil. Season the fish on both sides with remaining 1/4 tsp. salt and pepper and add to skillet, skin side up. Cook until golden brown on the bottom (about 3 mins). Turn and cook for another 3 min, or until just cooked through. Transfer to plate and serve with the vegetables.
