In three weeks, December 6th-9th, education ideas will be examined and entertained in a whole new way. Big Ideas are set in motion in Half Moon Bay.
Program Highlights
Connect the Dots
Yvonne Chan, leader of one of the most successful urban conversion charter schools in the nation will join us at the Fest. Principal at Vaughn Next Century Learning Center and Member of the CA State Board of Education, Chan has seen firsthand how big ideas that sit un-embodied in peoples' hearts can turn into gripes and disappointments. In response, she successfully makes the case for investing in human capital and connecting the dots of human services in K-12 education.
Include The Arts When Talking Innovation
Mauro ffortisimo learned his craft by deconstructing pianos to invent new sounds and sculpture. His sculptures and sounds will inspire us throughout the Fest. Applying his approach of remix and creation, ISKME and its Teaching Fellows are working to integrate his unique art form into multidisciplinary K-12 learning, including lesson plans and activities. Join the discussions at http://oerarts.ning.com about incorporating the arts into learning.
The Buzz on Big Ideas
Jonah Houston, IDEO Designer and Big Ideas Fest Program Co-Designer, and Lead Facilitator of Action Collabs
"I've attended numerous educational conferences and rarely feel that I leave with new, tangible tools and ideas. Our goal with Action Collabs is to get people to start taking action, even if it's a seemingly small step, towards changing their world. Our action-based design aims to have everyone leave with a useful set of tools to start pushing the needle from wherever they are now. If you have enough people pushing from different levels, you get past things which have appeared as roadblocks in the past."
Big Ideas in Motion

Not many people know that the second largest producer of graduates in the country is led by a poet/songwriter. Big Ideas Fest speaker, Sandy Shugart, President of Valencia Community College will share with you why a creative and collaborative approach to higher education and economic development makes him outstanding in his field.
