TECHPROS TIPS

Interview Tips
Source:  Interview Center @ ResumeEdge.com
A strong resume and cover letter will get you an interview, but only a strong interview will land you a job.

  • Highlight your qualifications and accomplishments.
  • Answer questions directly and succinctly.
  • If the interview is conducted by telephone, it is helpful to have note cards with your vital information sitting next to the phone.
  • Flex with the interviewer, following his or her lead.
  • If the interviewer does not ask you for information that you think is important to proving your superiority as a candidate, politely interject it.
  • Come to the interview prepared with highlights and anecdotes of your skills, qualities, and experiences.
  • Ask well-placed questions.
  • Anticipate the transferable skills and personal qualities that are required for the job.
  • Develop brief stories on your own professional, volunteer, educational and personal experience that highlight your skills and qualities.
  • Keep your responses concise and present them in less than two minutes.
  • Treat each person as an important individual.
  • Make eye contact with each person and speak directly to the person asking each question.
  • Accentuate what you have to offer and your interest.

Nine Pitfalls of Employment Interviews
Source: Excerpts from article by Will Helmlinger

Things to avoid when you are interviewing candidates.

  1. Closed-mindedness.
  2. Decisions made too slowly or too quickly.
  3. Applicant data misinterpreted.  Hearing only what you want to hear.
  4. Looking for the perfect fit.  No candidate will be a perfect ten!
  5. Pressure to fill a position.  This affects judgment.  Would you go out on a blind date and after 15 minutes propose marriage?
  6. Ignoring patterns that exist in the resume that are similar to patterns that also develop during the behavioral interview. Everyone has at least one main theme and behavioral patterns in their life.
  7. Talking too much.  Ask a question, then listen.  You can never learn anything while you are talking.
  8. Failure to see a candidate as having strengths and weaknesses.
  9. Asking closed-ended questions.  This will not give you the information you need to make an educated decision.
