WFPI makes contribution to Collegium Telemedicus

As you know, the WFPI Outreach Tele-radiology group uses the Collegium Telemedicus platform to supply second opinion, readings to a variety of places world wide. The Collegium Telemedicus has been of enormous value to us, and we are very grateful for the continuous support that its team offers to our operations. We are glad to report that the WFPI has recently contributed with a donation of US$ 3,000.00 to the Collegium Telemedicus.  The contribution comes as an expression of our gratitude, hoping it shows how much we appreciate the service that the Collegium team provides.

The 17th Annual Conference of the Asian and Oceanic Society for Pediatric Radiology (AOSPR) was successfully held in Shanghai September 21-24, 2017

Special Thanks to Dr. Laya for Leading TB Group and Welcome to Dr. Sodhi!

Dr. Bernard F. Laya has just finished his mandate as the lead of the 'Tuberculosis Group', a subcommittee within WFPI Outreach in charge of dealing with issues related with this endemic and frequently mortal illness. Dr. Kushaljit Sodhi, from PGI Chandigarh (India), is the new TB group leader and we welcome him to this new position.
Under Dr. Laya’ s leadership, the TB teleradiology group was formed in 2015, offering consultation on difficult cases through the Collegium Telemedicus server.  In 2017, the journal Pediatric Radiology published the “TB Symposium” he organized, with articles written by experts in the topic. And he is planning an event in the Philippines to mark the International Day of Tuberculosis in March of 2018, with speakers from around the world. He will remain as a member at large of the group and will continue to participate as a Council of Directors member, representing the AOSPR.
Bernie (as he is affectionately known) is a Professor of Radiology and current Associate Dean for Student and Faculty Affairs at St. Luke’s College of Medicine – William H. Quashia Memorial  in the Philippines. He is also the Director of Radiology at St. Luke’s Medical Center-Global City, and Head of Pediatric Radiology at St. Luke’s Medical Center-Quezon City, Philippines. He is a Program Committee member in pediatric radiology for Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and of the Asian Oceanic School of Radiology. In 2016, Dr. Laya was made an Honorary Member of the Society for Pediatric Radiology during its annual meeting.
The WFPI is grateful for his contributions and hopes to count with his support in the years to come.

Loss of Alan Levenstein

WFPI mourns the loss of Alan Levenstein.  Dr. Boechat writes "He was a great supporter of the WFPI and his advice was particularly welcome in the crucial early months of the organization’s development.  As you know, Dr. Dorothy Bulas introduced Alan to the WFPI and the challenges it faced. Through his position as a Senior Lecturer at Columbia’s University Mailman School of Public Health, he designed a Consulting Workshop in 2012 for the second year students, assigning the WFPI as a case study to five of them.  Dr. Boechat had the pleasure to travel to New York in order to attend their final presentation.  The document produced was very insightful and provided a plethora of useful advice.  During a 5-year strategic planning review, the document’s recommendations were again helpful.

We are indebted to Alan’s vision, generosity, creativity and enthusiasm.  Dr. Bulas kept in touch with him over the years and brought back his ideas to the organization leadership. Alan was an extraordinary person and through his support, we felt validated and encouraged to go ahead with new initiatives."

WFPI Fellowship (Observership) Outreach in South Africa

WFPI is offering up to a three month sponsored training to be spent at Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Johannesburg in South Africa under Dr Jaishree Naidoo as a mentor to the tune of $3000 US to cover transport and living expenses.

The program aims to enhance the clinical practice and teaching of paediatric radiology at all levels of healthcare more broadly in Africa, by developing expertise in imaging techniques and familiarity with protocols appropriate to the continent’s burden of childhood disease. The program is designed to complement and expand basic specialist training in diagnostic radiology.  The outcome will be detailed knowledge and in-depth experience of paediatric imaging in the context of Africa’s unique disease burden.  The knowledge and skills acquired will empower a radiologist to conduct optimal paediatric imaging in either a general radiology service or a dedicated paediatric service.
