Erica Lee Carter wins unanimous labor endorsement

Erica Lee Carter secured the unanimous endorsement Thursday of the Harris County AFL-CIO Council, the largest umbrella group of labor organizations in the Houston area, in her race for the Democratic nomination for State Representative for District 146.

“In Texas, our workers are under constant attack by Republican efforts to undermine their ability to organize,” Carter said.  “I look forward to being a partner with labor to protect the rights of workers in the Texas Legislature.”

The AFL-CIO includes more than a dozen local unions, including:

  • Houston Federation of Teachers
  • Communication Workers of America
  • Houston Educational Support Personnel Union

The unions were unanimous in their support of Lee Carter.

“We have unions to thank for weekends, the 40-hour work week, family and medical leave, the minimum wage, paid vacation and so many other benefits we enjoy, and now I thank them for believing in me,” Carter said. “In the Texas House, I will stand against any and all efforts to weaken workers’ rights.”

Carter is seeking the Democratic nomination for Texas House District 146, which is open after incumbent Rep. Borris Miles was selected to be the Democratic nominee for Senate District 13. Precinct chairs will select the nominee on August 6.

Carter is an educator. In 2012, she was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Harris County Department of Education.
