Urgent update

It has recently come to our attention the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) has decided not to accept any Medicare Advantage Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans. Aetna’s PFFS plan is known as the Aetna Medicare Opensm Plan.

Crozer-Keystone Health System (CKHS) has also notified Aetna that they are no longer accepting any Medicare Private Fee-for-Service plans.

While we are disappointed that UPHS and CKHS have decided not to accept our PFFS members, our primary concern at this time is ensuring that your clients and their retirees continue to receive a high level of service from Aetna and a smooth transition to other providers. Please be assured Aetna is committed to providing your clients with the greatest access and customer service possible.

Action Plan

UPHS confirmed to Aetna that if your Aetna PFFS clients are currently in a course of treatment at UPHS, they will accept the Aetna PFFS plan until that course of treatment is completed. UPHS also advised Aetna that UPHS will honor any appointments scheduled by Aetna PFFS members through March 1, 2008. For any appointments scheduled to take place after March 1, 2008, your Aetna PFFS clientss should confirm these appointments directly with their UPHS health care provider.

However, as we have noted in Aetna PFFS plan enrollment materials and member communication materials, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services permits doctors, hospitals and other health care providers to accept or decline a PFFS member on a member-by-member and/or case-by-case basis without notifying Aetna.

Please advise your clients to have their employees or retirees discuss their personal situation with their UPHS and/or CKHS health care providers and confirm whether the provider will continue to provide treatment and/or honor previously scheduled appointments.

There are numerous highly regarded academic health care systems that offer the full spectrum of primary and specialty care within the five-county Philadelphia area that may choose to accept PFFS plan members.
