Our President is making news!

Our President Michael Chan has been creating news all across California. Recently, he was at the state Capitol testifying before the Assembly Judiciary Committee regarding the impact of Proposition 209 on California's minorities, women and small business owners. He returned to Sacramento for the Greenlining Institute's Good Economy Day of Action,” where he addressed legislators about opportunities to effectively engage ethnic businesses in the fight against pollution and poverty.

Michael then made a stop at Comcast’s San Francisco studios to be featured on their program “Newsmakers,” where he talked about the persistent “model minority” myth associated with Asian Americans.

Later in the month, Michael was invited by San Jose City Councilmember Ash Kalra to represent ASIAN, Inc. at the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month proclamation ceremony at San Jose City Hall.

>Most recently, Michael was featured in his Sacramento Bee op-ed entitled “Keep spreading the wealth in California’s clean energy boom,” in which he called for passage of the EmPower California Act, AB 865, which would level the playing field for businesses owned by women, people of color, disabled veterans, and gay, lesbian and transgender individuals in projects funded by the California Energy Commission.

Our AAPI Heritage Month golf champions are...

Matthew Huey, Vernon Takahashi and Robert Chan of MH Construction Management! Check out our Facebook gallery of the participating teams here.

Our first-ever AAPI Heritage Month Golf Tournament, building on the success of the decades-long golfing tradition of the the Asian American Architects and Engineers, featured a diverse field of 20 teams, representing such established firms as Skanska and Norman S. Wright Mechanical Equipment. Thank you to all teams for their support!

MBDA Centers, Wells Fargo team up for "Diversity in Contracting"

Our Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Business Centers in San Jose, San Francisco and Fresno hosted the “Diversity in Contracting Opportunities” panels and expo, sponsored by Wells Fargo, at Prospect Silicon Valley. The event focused on teaching emerging small businesses “Strategies to Identify, Pursue and Fund Business Opportunities.”

Representatives from California Water Service Company, Agbayani Construction Group, City of San Jose, General Services Administration, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Valley Transportation Authority, among others, gave emerging small businesses insight on multiple topics such as direct and second- tier public contracting business development and opportunities, and funding small business operations and growth.

After the panel, the small businesses were treated to an expo and networking session that afforded them direct contact with the panelists to find real opportunities and create relationships with some of the largest companies in their respective industries.
