Friends of Calakmul Trains Local Teachers to Be Environmental Educators In 2005, with a grant from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Calakmul completed the first environmental education program in the areas surrounding the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. The goal of the project was to provide teachers with the information and materials they needed to educate students about the importance of Calakmul and how to conserve it.
The project included the development of materials on birds and tropical forests that were disseminated to both rural and urban schools. In total, FOC delivered the educational materials to 16 schools, 3 supervisors of regular and indigenous elementary schools, several high schools, and 2 school libraries.
In addition, the project included School Yard Ecology training workshops that trained local teams of teachers and biologists to make science, ecology, and conservation accessible to students through direct experiences in their immediate environment. Twelve teachers from 10 communities and six members of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve staff participated in the workshop.
A significant result of the workshops was greater recognition of the work that Friends of Calakmul is doing and its importance for protecting biodiversity.

Friends of Calakmul and Sister Land Trust D&R Greenway Announce Partnership at October 2005 US Land Trust Rally In October 2005, Friends of Calakmul and Sister Land Trust Partner D&R Greenway presented its partnership to the US Land Trust Community at the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) Rally in Madison, Wisconsin.
The presentation demonstrated a new model for land preservation, in which the New Jersey-based D&R Greenway recognized the importance of protecting both the summer and winter habitats for the birds that depend on our North and Central American forests.
Protection of the habitats and biodiversity of the Sourlands is among D&R Greenway Land Trust’s primary goals. Through a State partnership, and in concert with the three counties and five townships that make up the core Sourlands forest, D&R Greenway has acquired over 3,500 acres of land. These natural lands protect headwater streams, contiguous forest and surrounding grasslands.
In 2003, they joined with Amigos de Calakmul of Mexico, the Mexican partner organization of Friends of Calakmul, to create the first International Sister Land Trust Partnership between regional land trusts. The motivation for the partnership was research that has shown that there are more than 65 species of neotropical migratory birds that breed in the Sourland Mountains of central New Jersey and that winter in the Mayan Forest spanning Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where Friends of Calakmul is working, and neighboring Guatemala and Belize.
Thus far, the partnership has yielded significant benefits for both organizations, including support for Friends to Calakmul to build a scientific field station at Calakmul in the coming year and research that is leading to greater understanding of the migratory bird population that share both habitats.
