A Message From Our President

Dear JCRC-NY Friends and Supporters:

This newsletter highlights a few of the notable recent activites of JCRC-NY.  From missions to Israel to anti-Semitism and possible Holocaust denial, we work hard every day to resolve problems before they become crises.  If you don't hear about a crisis and just read that a problem was solved, then we succeeded.  We need your continued support to keep that success going. I urge you to join us at our 2018 Gala Dinner on May 9th at The Pierre.

On behalf of our Officers, Board of Directors and staff, I wish you a very happy Passover,

Charles Temel Signature

JCRC-NY 2018 Congressional Breakfast features Two U.S. Senators and Nine U.S. Representatives

JCRC-NY's annual Congressional Breakfast provides an opportunity for leaders of major national and regional Jewish organizations, public officials and diplomats to exchange views with the NYS Congressional Delegation.

Senate Democratic Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), special guest Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and nine Members of the House from New York’s Downstate Congressional Delegation participated in JCRC-NY's 2018 Congressional Breakfast at UJA-Federation of NY in mid-town Manhattan chaired by Zoya Raynes Friedman and sponsored by Corporate Benefactor Willy Pilku, owner of CORE Scaffold Systems Inc. and WAVE Construction Group.

The impact of JCRC-NY's Israel Missions Project was clearly demonstrated this past January when Pastors Gilford Monrose, Mullery Jean-Pierre, Clifton McDowell, and Charles Galbreath, who all participated in a 2017 JCRC-NY Mission, organized a trip to Israel for 220 Caribbean-American pastors and congregants.

JCRC-NY Mobilizes on Poland's Holocaust Bill

The Polish government recently attempted to pass a bill that would fine or imprison individuals who claim “that the Polish Nation or the Republic of Poland is responsible or co-responsible for Nazi crimes."  As written, the bill could compromise the free exchange of ideas concerning the Holocaust and the roles played by the Polish people during WWII and the post-war period.

In response, JCRC-NY penned and publicized a letter to Maciej Golubiewski, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York, which was co-signed by over 40 local and national Jewish organizations.  The letter highlighted that "there were many righteous Poles who provided assistance to their Jewish neighbors and friends, but we are also obliged to remember that there were those who committed crimes against Jews during the Second World War."

Following this, Consul General Golubiewski met with JCRC-NY and other Jewish organizations to discuss our concerns regarding the proposed legislation.  Ultimately, the Polish government suspended the bill until it could be reviewed by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal and a compromise could be reached with the Israeli government.

JCRC-NY's Young Professionals Network Launched

On February 27th, a new Young Professionals Network was launched with a cocktail reception and discussion centered on the changing role of the Jewish community in the NYC political landscape.

JCRC-NY Board Members Ester Fuchs, Columbia University Professor, and Jonathan Greenspun, Mercury Communications Managing Director, shared their expertise before taking a variety of thoughtful questions from the fully engaged audience.  The event was hosted at L’Oreal USA with the generosity of JCRC-NY Board Member Suzanne Davidowitz.

The goal of this Young Professionals Network initiative is to cultivate relationships with individuals in their 20’s and 30’s and connect them to the work of JCRC-NY.
