A Message From Our President

Dear JCRC-NY Friends and Supporters:

This newsletter highlights several significant activites of JCRC-NY this past spring. They include a Mission to Israel with the New York City Council, the 2018 Gala Dinner and the Celebrate Israel Parade marking Israel's 70th Birthday. We also played a vital role ensuring the safety of NY Jewish schools, synagogues and organizations by assisting them with the 2018 Homeland Security Grant applications. Finally, we had an inspirational graduation of our YouthBridge-NY teen leadership training program.

Michael S. Miller, JCRC-NY Executive Vice President & CEO, and I recently authored an op-ed featured in the June 22nd edition of the Long Island Jewish World to express our support for the Never Again Education Act. The goal of the law is to educate students about the horrors of the Holocaust. The bi-partisan legislation was introduced by Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Dan Donovan (R-NY). On behalf of our Officers, Board of Directors and staff, we thank you for your continued support.

JCRC-NY is a key resource to synagogues, day schools, Jewish community centers and other Jewish organizations that apply for grants issued by the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. Since the inception of the program, NY institutions have received over $46 million (27% of the total nationwide). This year, Congress allocated a record $50 million for security hardware upgrades for facilities used by high-risk nonprofits.

JCRC-NY partners with the Jewish Federations of North America, UJA-Federation of NY and other organizations to advocate for the allocations and educates Jewish institutions during the grant application process.  Our efforts increase their chances to receive these funds that make their premises safer and more secure.

In 2018, JCRC-NY sponsored two live trainings, fielded hundreds of email and phone inquiries, and there were a record 5,518 unique page views of our dedicated, grant webpages.

New York City Council Mission to Israel

From April 12-20th, JCRC-NY brought to Israel a delegation of New York City Council members headed by Speaker Corey Johnson and supported by Jewish Caucus Chair Chaim Deutsch.  As the mission coincided with Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel Memorial Day and Independence Day), the delegation participated in memorials for Israel’s fallen soldiers and in official state celebrations marking 70 years of the democratic state and homeland of the Jewish people.

The delegation met with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, opposition leader Isaac Herzog and Minister Tzachi Hanegbi and were even granted access to Israel’s National Treasures Department.  As Speaker Johnson said, “Am Yisrael Chai!”
