8 Ways to Beat the Heat
Our guide to surviving the dog days of summer
With a heat wave suffocating most of Canada and the US, we put together some easy ways (conserving energy is key here) to keep your dog cool.
1. Why swim when you can float? Get your dog a floating pool lounger made especially for dogs. They look cool and come in three sizes. 2. Freeze your dog's treats. We like to pop Salmon Paws Alaskan wild salmon sticks for pets in the freezer for a chilly snack for our dogs to gnaw on. Or freeze blueberries and sliced up bananas for a low-cal, cool dog treat. If you can drag yourself from in front of the fan, you can whip up these frozen peanut butter and banana treats in mere minutes. 3. Soak the Cool Vest in water then wrap it around your dog for long lasting cooling through evaporation. Its liner keeps your dog dry even though the vest is wet. 4. Traveling? Use zap straps to fasten a battery powered hand fan to your dog's kennel, on the outside, facing in. 5. Fill a kiddy pool (this one's made especially for dogs) with a few inches of fresh, cool water for your dog to romp, lounge in, or lap up. 6. Hydrate. For those on the go, these collapsible water dishes are super convenient. At home, the WaterDog automatic outdoor fountain turns itself on to deliver fresh water whenever your dog comes within three feet. 7. Misty mornings. Fill a spray bottle with fresh, cool water and mist your dog's fur at regular intervals to cool down his inner temp. Mist yourself while you're at it. 8. Keep your dogs busy (and happy!) for hours with an ice treat. Freeze up toys, treats, broth or any other goodies you can think of for a doggie-sized backyard popsicle. A perfect hot weather distraction while you retire to the nearest lounge chair with the summer issue of Modern Dog. + Don't forget to enter this week's giveaway for your chance to win one of 15 Kong Wobblers.
