Rock for Dimes Newsletter
We're Still Rockin'!
Welcome back for Issue #2 of the March of Dimes Canada (MODC) Rock for Dimes newsletter! In this Issue, you’ll read about what’s happened so far, details on upcoming events, special features, a focus on people involved in the event and so much more.

Okay, let’s get this show on the road…

Halifax and Pennzoil - Jumpin’, Jammin’, Jivin’ and Drivin’!

Rock for Dimes Halifax 2012Rock for Dimes is a signature MODC event. It offers bands an opportunity to battle it out in front of fans for top spot in their city… and Halifax, Nova Scotia is the rockin’ place to be on November 1, 2013. So if you are in the area come on down to the Cunard Centre and get in on the jumpin’, jammin’ and jivin’.

Another reason to come out is that our Rock for Dimes sponsor, Pennzoil has partnered with MODC to donate up to $15,000 to retrofit a vehicle for a deserving family or individual living with a disability in Nova Scotia! The special winner will be presented during this event. It’s all about reclaiming freedom, independence and drivin’ on down the highway.

And the best reason of all: money raised from this high energy event helps children and adults with disabilities from across the province by supporting the MODC Conductive Education® program. Man, talk about a win-win happening!

Tune into our website at marchofdimes.ca to get more info on this incredible program, and the many other programs and services MODC has to offer.

Rock for Dimes Review

The fun was immeasurable as over the last couple of months, bands were out in full force to sing and play their hearts out in Edmonton, Kitchener and Sherkston Shores.

Both Kitchener and Sherkston Shores (in the Niagara Region) were showcase events, so no “winning” band was crowned, while in Edmonton, the winning band was the Josh Sahunta Band.

And the best result of all the singing, drumming and guitar playing at these exciting evenings, was that money was raised for some well-deserving programs: in Kitchener, the $2,500 raised went to Campers Helping Campers and Stroke Recovery Canada®; in Sherkston Shores, $1,500 was raised, also for Campers Helping Campers; and in Edmonton, over $9,500 was raised and went to local peer support groups in the Alberta area.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in these successful and entertaining evenings: hosts, judges, bands, audiences and supporters.

Bret "Hitman" Hart - a Hit with the Crowd!

Bret Hart at Rock For Dimes Edmonton 2013

Wow! What a treat for the crowd at the first-ever Pennzoil presents Rock for Dimes in Edmonton as none other than Bret 'Hitman' Hart, spokesperson of March of Dimes Canada's Stroke Recovery Canada® program took to the stage. There was no doubt he was a big hit!

Bret enthusiastically welcomed the audience, and thanked the bands, volunteers and guests for supporting a cause so dear to his heart. Of course, he also took the time to greet fans, sign autographs, take pictures, and raise awareness of Stroke Recovery Canada®. Way to go Bret!

The “Hitman” is a native of Calgary and is part of a wrestling dynasty led by his father, Stu Hart. He rocked the wrestling world by winning numerous championships over his 20-year wrestling career but, as he will tell you, his greatest victory has been his triumph over a devastating stroke in 2002. The stroke caused partial paralysis requiring months of physical therapy leading him to a successful recovery.

Thanks to Bret, champion wrestler and stroke survivor, for helping make Rock for Dimes the success it is today.

Rock on Jeff!

Jeff Poolton at Rock for Dimes Sherkston ShoresJeff Poolton is a 37 year old singer/songwriter who has discovered that music has become his greatest source of comfort and confidence while facing the challenges of his life with Cerebral Palsy.

These challenges, along with his desire to thank those that inspired him on his journey, led to the creation of his new pop album “Welcome to My World”. The collection of original songs is chronologically organized, as Jeff sings his way through the highlights of his life.

Jeff is a passionate supporter of many organizations that assist people with disabilities and he was a big part of our Kitchener Rock for Dimes event. His hope is that through his music people will see the world a little differently.

Sit Back and Strap Yourself In!

Dali Van Gogh

One of the bands competing this year at the Halifax Rock for Dimes is Dali Van Gogh, a four piece Hard Rock band out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Their sound is “reminiscent of early years AC/DC and Led Zeppelin slashed through with a more modern-sounding crunch on the guitar work” (Stuart Rankin).

Dali Van Gogh were chosen as one of the top 25 Bands of 2012 by Rockwired Magazine, with their Guitarist Isaac Kent featured as one of the top guitarists world wide in Independent Music earlier in the year.

So, if you get the chance to attend the Halifax Rock for Dimes, sit back and strap yourself in as the band takes to the stage and rocks the Cunard Centre, November 1, 2013.

Nico - A Real Rock and Roll Cutie

One of the people enriched by the generosity coming out of the Rock for Dimes event is a real rock and roll cutie by the name of Nico - a spirited five-year-old with Cerebral Palsy. With MODC programs, such as Conductive Education®, children like Nico are enabled to do things that once seemed impossible.

Thanks for your support!
