Rock for Dimes eNewsletter

Did you know, since the first Rock for Dimes event in Toronto over 10 years ago, we’ve raised more than $1.5 million for March of Dimes Canada programs and services? That’s a million and a half dollars for Canadians living with disabilities, and it’s all thanks to the amazing bands, judges, sponsors, volunteers, and donors who have participated over the years.

We want to thank our supporters, including the musicians who raise money and perform, the people who buy tickets and fill venues, and everyone who contributes in other, crucial ways. You are essential to the work we do here at March of Dimes Canada (MODC), and the lives we touch.

Grammy-nominated musician Eric Howk teams up with March of Dimes Canada!
We're thrilled to announce that Eric Howk, of the Grammy-nominated band Portugal. The Man is now our honorary Rock for Dimes ambassador! Eric has become an advocate for accessibility and disability rights since an accident severed his spine and put him in a wheelchair ten years ago. He visited our L.I.F.E program and supported our Giving Tuesday campaign on social media.

Stay tuned for more details about Eric Howk and Rock for Dimes. Meanwhile, check out their hit single Feel It Still.

Spotlight on: Rock for Dimes Montreal
March of Dimes Canada’s 11th annual Rock for Dimes Montreal event smashed all expectations by raising more than $55,000 for kids and adults with disabilities! That’s the most money raised at a single Rock for Dimes event to date!
Six local bands
– The Cellar Rats, Exiled on the Main, The Sharx, Miss M & The Gents, pS, and MTL – rocked the Theatre Corona on November 17, 2017. It was an epic showdown, but Exiled on the Main edged out the competition, and was crowned Montreal’s best corporate band.

Thanks a Million

We’d like to extend an extra-special thank you to the Marilyn Takefman Foundation, who generously donated $25,000 to our Montreal Stroke Club in memory of Marilyn’s husband, Stanley Backman. We’d also like to acknowledge Adam Cieply, MODC Board Member and veteran Rock for Dimes judge, for all the time and effort he’s put in to our Rock for Dimes Montreal events. We couldn’t do it without him.

Thanks a (Quarter) Million!

Montreal has raised a grand total of $250,000 for MODC! Thanks again to everyone who’s helped to make that happen. We’ll see you in 2018!

Assistive Mobile Technology Initiative
Now heading into its third year, our Assistive Mobile Technology Initiative (AMTI) has been a great addition to our Rock for Dimes events in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Halifax and Montreal.

AMTI provides customized tablets to people living with disabilities who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them, and the tablets are loaded with apps and software that meet each person’s unique needs. Our goal is to help participants engage with their community, control their environment, pursue new hobbies or education, and communicate more easily
things many of us take for granted.
2018 is off to a great start; nine Calgarians received devices through AMTI, and we expanded AMTI Vancouver to include all of BC. That means folks throughout the province became eligible to win a device. We’re very excited about continuing this great initiative to more locations across Canada!
