Taking Centre Stage - March of Dimes Canada's Rock for Dimes
Wow, what a season we’ve had so far with our Rock for Dimes events! Taking centre stage – astounding Anniversary celebrations, special guests, jammin’ judges, amazing new bands … and of course the answers to your burning questions – who won, who raised the most, how much was raised? You’ll also find out what electrifying events are still to come.

We know you can’t wait so, without further ado, we give you…
Toronto’s Prevu and 10th Anniversary Party – Did you see who was there?
Rock For Dimes Toronto Prevu Party
Bret 'Hitman' Hart, Paul Maneri, and Paul Rosen at
MODC's Prevu Cocktail party in Toronto.

What a celebration we had in Toronto this year! The festivities started with March of Dimes Canada’s first ever Prevu Cocktail party where our wonderful monthly donors and other honoured guests were offered a taste of progressive rock band, Shroud of Gaia. This party was followed up by the electrifying main event - Toronto's 10th Anniversary Rock for Dimes.

And to make a special evening even more spectacular, March of Dimes Stroke Recovery Canada® spokesperson, Bret 'Hitman' Hart, and Paralympic gold-medal winning sledge hockey goalie, commentator, and longtime friend of March of Dimes Canada, Paul Rosen, made special guest appearances.

In 2002, Bret overcame a devastating stroke – a defeat he calls his “greatest victory”. We are delighted to have Bret helping us with our mission to educate Canadian stroke survivors on how to "Survive and Thrive" after a stroke. There’s no doubt he is a champion in and out of the ring!

In 1999, Paul Rosen had his leg amputated above the knee. Not letting this stop him, he joined Team Canada sledge hockey at 39 years old as goalie. He won a Paralympic Gold Medal in 2006 and several hockey world championships. Paul has been involved with March of Dimes Canada supporting fundraisers, giving talks, and in 2010, he was awarded March of Dimes Canada's Rick Hansen Award of Excellence.

Both men spent the evening signing autographs, greeting guests, meeting fans and enjoying the vast array of musical talent offered up.

It was so exciting to have Bret and Paul, and our donors helped celebrate what March of Dimes is all about – serving people with disabilities. We had some great new bands this year and of course, a special congratulations goes to the winning band, Dark Horse. Everyone rocked out and we raised over $20,000. It was without question a very successful evening.

Marching to the Beat of a Different Drum – Jeff Burrows

Jeff BurrowsJeff Burrows is the drummer and percussionist for Canadian rock bands, Crash Karma, and The Tea Party. He began drumming at 11 years of age and started doing so professionally in 1990.

Burrows' style is influenced by jazz drummer greats such as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and Max Roach, as well as rock drummer gods, Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland.

In 2005, Burrows joined Canadian musicians, as drummer in the one-off project the Big Dirty Band, recording a cover of Sonny Curtis' “I Fought the Law” for the Trailer Park Boys: The Movie soundtrack. In 2008, Burrows was instrumental in forming the band Crash Karma. In 2011, Burrows reunited with his Tea Party bandmates and the trio embarked on a Canadian summer tour. In 2014, Jeff was a Judge at the Windsor Rock for Dimes event – and we were all thrilled at his participation.

A Band on Fire - SUPERFIRE

SUPERFIRE In the summer of 2007, music therapist Bill Murray had the vision of creating a rock band. Thanks to a generous donation of musical equipment from Canada’s premier music retailer, Long & McQuade, SUPERFIRE was born.

Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Williams Syndrome, Batten’s Disease, Blindness, Acquired Brain Injury, Developmental Delay, and Down Syndrome are not labels typically associated with Rock Stars, but the uniquely challenged youths that make up SUPERFIRE plan on changing that. Their Mission Statement is, “to capture the healing power of music to inspire others and change society's view on the differently abled.”

Starting as a music therapy group, SUPERFIRE has exceeded everyone's expectations – and if their sizzling performance at Toronto’s Rock for Dimes 10th Anniversary event is any indication, be prepared to have your socks rocked off by this band on fire!
