Opening Reception Saturday November 14, 2009 7 - 10 PMOBJCT Gallery invites you to experience our latest exhibition addressing the intersection between art and design. Increasingly, artists turn to design for its ability to be relevant; they see the power it has to be meaningful and speak to the public. Designers and architects - greats such as Koolhaas and Gehry included - likewise plug into the respected realm of fine art, loosening further the already faltering dichotomy of art and design.
The November 14th opening will explore two paths of experience for the viewer. First, the concept of design process and inspiration through prototypes and limited series works will offer insight to designers work without the constraint of mass production. Secondly, a mash-up of music, digital media and experiential sculptural elements by collective Auditory Aphasia will immerse and transport the senses to another place. Don't miss this exciting evening!

EXPERIMENTAL - Prototypes and Beyond
November 14 through December 6, 2009 Designers often tread a fine line between industrial application and aesthetics, wanting to create an object that retains beauty and visual value but also accomplish a task. Much experimentation often goes into a designed object with designers applying varying materials, processes and production techniques to achieve their final goal. The results of this process are models and full-scale prototypes that test the final product for both function and visual design. Another result of experimentation involves creating limited edition or “one-off” objects that are more concerned with a visual presentation than function or use. These objects skew the line between art and design and are often created purely for their artistic merit although utilizing design as subject matter or medium.
EXPERIMENTAL – Prototypes and Beyond, explores these objects and ultimately reflects on the process and influences that inspire designers. Whether working with a new material or process to work out design elements in advance of production or just exploring more visceral concepts that would not lend themselves to mass production, this intersection and the objects produced gives us insight into our physical world and the mind of the designer. Please join us for a foray into the world of objects that are experiments in inspiration.
Designers who will be represented in this groundbreaking exhibition include:
Campana Brothers Johanna Grawunder Charles Hollis Jones Blue Lounge Ross Menuez Marre Moerel Karim Rashid Michael Solis Michael Young

OBJCTive
Objects (or Artifacts as R. Buckminster Fuller would call them) are the ultimate expression of human ideas, ideals, and cultural preoccupations. Studies have shown that we touch an average of 500 designed objects a day. This does not even include the objects we respond to visually or aurally.
Addressing the boundaries between disciplines or ideas is a way of blurring them, and then documenting the process in a way that offers an academic perspective or cultural commentary is what OBJCT will endeavor to achieve. Giving a unique view into the inspirations and processes by which artists and designers create their worlds, we will be educated and enlightened in the physical world that surrounds us. Art and design walk a fine line between medium and message, craft and technology, commerce and culture.. please join us on this journey. David Shearer Founder + Director
