So many apples, so many delicious recipes on VegWeb!
Recipe Spotlight on Apples!
I'm still hanging on (okay, more like grasping) to the final days of summer, but I've got to face the facts. My nieces and nephews are back in school, my favorite shows are coming back, and the street corners are free of bored teenagers. Actually, fall isn't sounding so bad. It gets even better when I think about the many varieties of apples that are infiltrating the produce section of my local co-op. Sturdy fall apples might not be as sexy as summer mango but there is something to be said for reliability. Apples are the good guys of the fruit world. Sure, they aren't as sleek as a passion fruit, or as cute as a fig, but they'll be there for you when the others aren't. You can find them year-round at any store but fall is really their time to shine. There are hundreds of varieties, from Albany Beauties to Zuccalmaglio's Reinette. Each type has a distinct flavor, color, and texture, and works well for different recipes. You might favor a Granny Smith or a Macintosh for baking, where you may prefer to munch on a Fuji. You never know unless you get out there and try them all. If you don't, I will! Or maybe I will anyway. I love me some apples.

Cooking with Webmistress Laura!
My boyfriend recently had his wisdom teeth removed and even though he is wonderful and perfect, he didn't take it like a champ. Or maybe he did. When all was said and done, they literally ripped several large teeth out of his head. The pain must be terrible but to me, what's even worse, is that he couldn't eat solid foods for several days. The horror! Was he going to subsist on nothing but porridge for the next week, like an orphan from Oliver? Not if I had anything to do with it. As a recent-ish convert to the slow cooker way of life, I realized this was the perfect time to bust it out and make some delicious, grandma-style (but with a kick!) apple sauce. Nothing can turn a toothless man's frown upside down like a huge bowl of spicy, delicious applesauce. This stuff did just the trick. It's also great served over vegan ice cream, another food he was able to enjoy. Actually, I enjoyed it very much, too. That's right, I ate soft foods in solidarity with him. I know, you all want to date me now.
What You Need:
10 large cooking apples, peeled and cut into chunks (I used Braeburn apples)What You Do:
Combine the apples, water, and lemon juice in a slow cooker. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. Stir in the brown sugar and garam masala and continue cooking another 30 minutes.
Superstar VegWebber!
Each week we'll highlight a member of the VegWeb community who goes above and beyond to make VegWeb a truly excellent place to spend time on the internet.
This week, "Hanashi!"
VegWebber since? November 2007
What do you do when you're not on VegWeb? Cook! Or chasing after the fabulous 3-year-old I nanny
What is the best thing about being vegan? I'm not vegan but one of the nice things about cooking and baking vegan is it is often cheaper than traditional baking. Why use an expensive egg, when you can use baking soda/powder or healthy applesauce or bananas?
#1 cooking tip? Don't be afraid to make a mess, or use your hands!
French fries or (vegan) ice cream? French fries THEN ice cream
Read Hanashi's entire interview and tell her how fabulous she is in the Superstar VegWebber thread!
