Citrus to the Rescue!
In the dead of winter, there aren't many fruits that are naturally growing. That's why it's called, the dead of winter. Sigh. The lack of nature's candy can make it hard to get your naturally sweetened goodness on. If you don't want to turn to chocolate, we have one savior: citrus. Deliciously juicy and sweet (or sour!), citrus really satisfies. If you're not purely interested in sweets (what are you? crazy!?), I've included a few recipes for some savory citrus dishes. So now there is no excuse for being deficient in Vitamin C. If I hear about one VegWebber getting scurvy, I will not be pleased! I'm serious, people. Get to cooking!

Check out some of the recipes that I'm lovin' right now:

  • Time-Warp Lemon Squares
  • Orange Cornmeal Cake with Raspberry Preserves
  • Lemon Pearl Couscous with Tomato and White Beans
  • Orange Creamsicle Smoothie
  • Mandarin Coconut Whipped Pie
  • Pineapple Orange Cake
  • Grapefruit Avocado Salad

Work it, girl. Or boy. It's only February and too early to abandon those New Year's Resolutions. Come share your war stories from the gym and seek inspiration from your fellow runners (or dancers) (or boxers) (or whatever) in Setting Goals.

The Hottest Vegan Loot. Want the inside scoop on the latest and greatest vegan goodies? VegWebbers have their ear to the ground and they're happily sharing their secrets. From brand-new artisan cookie dough to chocolate skittles (they're vegan!?), we're shedding the light on the most delightful new vegan finds!

St. Patty's Day! It's time for rainbows, leprechauns, and everything green! That's right, St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner and we've got all the links, contests, recipes, and giveaways to help you celebrate. So raise a glass of (green) beer to our new St Patrick's Day page! Oh, and the page should officially be up at midnight tonight so if you get there a little early, please stare lovingly at the Valentine's Day page until then.

Something is brewing... Being vegan means that you create much of your food from scratch. But what about your drinks? Many beers aren't vegan, they can contain gelatin and isinglass (dried fish bladder). Gross! If you brew your own, you can make sure the process is 100 percent vegan and on top of that, you get to add all kinds of awesome flavors... like chocolate! It always comes back to candy with me. Talk strategy with fellow beer fans in HomeBrew.

I was a huge dork growing up so the highlight of my teenage mall visits wasn't making out with boys in the multiplex but rather, sneaking to Orange Julius for a smoothie or two. They were my absolute favorite treat. Basically a creamsicle in a cup, the glorious brain freeze was more than worth it. I recently learned that my favorite treats are made with milk, eggs, and all sorts of gross stuff like corn syrup and artifical flavoring. Another one of my childhood dreams, destroyed. Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss and then I remember, Hey! I can totally veganize that! I took one for the team and spent many difficult hours in the kitchen testing different flavor combos. I think I finally have it. A perfectly creamy, orangy smoothie that takes me right back to afternoons spent trying on totally age inappropriate clothes at Wet Seal. What? You know you did, too!

    What You Need:

1 large orange, cut into wedges
    1 cup coconut milk
    1 cup water
    1/4 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1-1/2 cups ice

    What You Do:

Combine all ingredients in a blender on high until smooth.

Each week, we highlight a member of the VegWeb community who goes above and beyond to make VegWeb a truly excellent place to spend time on the internet.

    This week, meet "_algae_!"

VegWebber since? Apparently I registered on August 7, 2006. I came here for recipes well before that, but I didn't start posting on the forums until sometime in 2008.

Where do you call home? I'm from Brookline, Massachusetts, but my current home is in Berlin, Germany.

Favorite VegWeb recipe to make for non-vegans? I often make a version of this Veggie Pot Pie and a version of Jenny's Famous Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, Coconut, Walnut Cookies that I just call everything cookies. They're really good with cranberries.

#1 cooking secret/tip? Don't be afraid to use a little salt. Mom, I'm talking to you.

Ice cream or French fries? Definitely ice cream.

Read _algae_'s entire interview and tell her how awesome she is in the Superstar VegWebber thread!

I don't know about you but my skin is looking pretty palid these days. The dry winter air combined with lack of sun makes me look like an extra in the Thriller video. Solutions? Working out is great for a rosy glow but what about when you don't have time to break a sweat? This is when I turn to my friend, blush. Blush is great because it can be subtle (or not so subtle, Hello Mac Counter!) and gives you a pretty finish that helps you take on the world! Or at least look human. To win an animal-friendly blush brush and adorable hemp makeup bag from EcoTools, head on over to our Weekly Giveaway and let me know the best way to stay bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on these cold winter days.

    Good luck!

    Peace in your kitchen,
