CSULB Students Set Their Sights on the Stars with Prestigious NASA Internships


When opportunities to study astronomy and physics with NASA experts came their way, three CSULB physics students jumped at the chance.

Master’s student Sam Koshy and undergraduates Jill Pestana and Stephanie Sodergren are serving in several NASA internships with the goal of expanding physics knowledge both in the scientific arena as well as for the public.

Elm Street Band

Concerts in the Grove - Elm Street Band

A fan favorite, this Long Beach group boasts alumni of Cal State Long Beach, Long Beach City College, Millikan High and Stanford Junior High. These four venerable rockers have jammed together for almost 40 years. The Long Beach Press-Telegram calls them “the soundtrack for the City of Long Beach.” If you like Elvis, The Beatles and The Eagles, you will love the Elm Street Band.

The musicianship and experience of the band members allows them to cover a wide range of artists, tunes, and styles. Having been together for the last 10 years, King Salmon regularly performs at southern California concerts, events, festivals, and clubs. Members of the band have performed with well-known artists.

The Emperors

The Emperors are a clear Long Beach favorite. The Emperors have performed in opening acts for Peter and Gordon, the Rolling Stones, The Righteous Brothers and later, Steely Dan. 

 The Emperors have put their mark on many high-energy covers. It haas scored big with fans with songs like The Who’s “Tommy,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” among others.

Two CSULB Engineering Students Chosen for Finals of Engineering Research Competition in Paris
Go green in the City

From a field of 600 entries, a team of two CSULB engineering students, Pushpender Singh and Manmeen Kaur, are among 25 teams that have qualified for the finals of the Go Green in the City international competition in Paris later this month.

Did You Know?

Surfer Surfing

With kids hitting the beaches this summer, did you know that several Beach alums played key roles in the development of surf culture?

John Severson (’56, MA Art) was the founder of Surfer Magazine  52 years ago, produced several groundbreaking surfing films in the 1960s, and is a noted artist. Here’s a short film about his life that was shown in Dec. 2011 when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award by Surfer Poll. Fast forward to the 2:50 minute marker:


Bob Hurley is the founder of Hurley International that designs and sells surf and board wear worldwide.


Aaron Pai (’81, B.S. Management) established the Surfers’ Hall of Fame and founded Huntington Surf and Sport.


Bruce Jones (’70, B.A. Economics) founded Bruce Jones Surfboards in 1973 that builds premium surfboards.
