1. Living within Our Means: City Services Redesigned
“The impact of the global economic downturn affects Ventura families, businesses and our city government. Instead of spending money we don’t have, the City Council directed us to prepare a two-year plan to deal with the crisis and reduce the spending gap by more than $11 million…
Changes to municipal services were necessary to operate within a spending plan of approximately $85 million in General Fund revenue during the next fiscal year. But it need not divert us from our long-term goals and our commitment to provide the very best municipal services within our means.
Our tasks ahead are great. Now is the time to come together to strengthen and improve our community where we live, work and raise our families. ”

2. VC Star “Tax increase measure to go to Ventura voters” June 23, 2009
The Ventura City Council, as expected, decided late Monday to go to voters in November to raise the local sales by a half-cent, and are hoping they warm to the possible $10 million it could raise for added police and enhanced local services.
Ending weeks of deliberations, the council voted 6-1 to move forward with a general half-cent tax increase, which would expire after four years. A general tax needs only a simple majority to pass.

3. Safe, Reliable Water: Rate Increase July 1
Beginning July 1, water and wastewater (sewer) bills within the City of Ventura will reflect the second part of the two-year rate increase plan approved by customers in October 2008.
This rate increase, as the first one did, averages seven percent and will fund replacement of aging pipes, compliance costs for stricter laws regulating environmental impacts, and rising expenses to operate and maintain the City’s water and sewer systems.

Ventura City Manager Rick Cole gives immediate insight into breaking news. In his latest post, Cole recognizes the important role of volunteers in Ventura's vitality.
“Everyone knows we are in tough times. Now more than ever, we need to build partnerships to meet the needs of our community.
Every day, volunteers step in to help. On Wednesday, the City of Ventura honored the hundreds of local citizens who pitch in – and last year contributed 42,000 hours of volunteer service to the community. Mayor Weir and Councilmembers Andrews, Morehouse and Summers all participated in paying tribute to Ventura's volunteer spirit.”
