1. Mayor Weir Speaks at Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Breakfast
On Friday, June 12, Mayor Christy Weir presented an update on the City's Economic Development to more than 150 attendees at the 2009 Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Breakfast. Dr. Bill Watkins, of California Lutheran University, provided keynote remarks and was followed by Jerry Roberts, publications manager at UC Santa Barbara.
Mayor Weir:
“Back in 2005, in tandem with the adoption of our General Plan, Ventura established a five-year strategic approach to economic development, focusing on six key priorities: The Auto Center; McGrath property; The Westside; The North Avenue; Downtown; and businesses in high potential industries.
In every category, Ventura actually has a larger share of countywide economic activity than our 13 percent share of countywide population. Our total economic output exceeds $8.5 billion a year, with 20 percent of retail sales in the county...

2. Register your Cellular Telephone for CodeRED Emergency Alerts
CodeRED is the City of Ventura’s high-speed emergency notification phone system.
You will receive a recorded telephone message in the event of emergency situations or critical community alerts in your area. Examples include: evacuation notices, fire reports, boil water notices, and missing child reports.
Ventura's emergency responders will attempt to notify you in the event of critical community alerts in your area, but cell numbers are not automatically included and must be registered individually to receive information such as evacuation notices.

3. Applications for WAV Units Due June 15
Artists of all types, working in any medium, at any stage in their career and from any geographic area are invited to apply for one of the 54 live/work units at the new Working Artists Ventura (WAV), located in the cultural district of downtown Ventura, California at the corner of Ventura Avenue and Thompson Boulevard. For more information about the artist units, please visit www.place.us. Applications are due Monday, June 15.

4. July 4th Street Fair offers a California Dreamin’ theme with Daylong Events and Entertainment
Ventura’s popular 4th of July Street Fair, a 34-year-old tradition, will be held on Saturday, July 4th in the Downtown Cultural District. The Independence Day celebration begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m.
Street Fair activities will stretch a full nine blocks along downtown’s Main Street from Fir Street to Ventura Avenue with approximately 300 new and returning artist and crafters, entertainment on three stages, and an assortment of food booths. Tickets for fireworks at the Ventura College Green will be available for purchase at the information booth on Main and California Streets. More

6. City Manager’s Blog: Saving local libraries
Ventura City Manager Rick Cole gives immediate insight into breaking news. In his latest post, Cole examines the budget crunch that libraries are facing statewide, including library locations in the city of Ventura, which are run by the County Library System.
“Amidst all the clamor about the State budget meltdown, there is more bad news for Ventura County libraries.
In the first round of cuts prompted by State cutbacks, County Library Director Jackie Griffin recommended consolidating Wright Library on the Ventura College campus with the downtown E.P. Foster Library. That remains the default option, although it has been put off by the ‘Save Wright Library’ fundraising campaign mounted by the Friends of the San Buenaventura Library.”
