"Latin Fire" brings on the heat March 8th

I wrote about this concert last month, but if you haven’t already bought your tickets for "Latin Fire" on March 8 at 8 pm, do it now!  This concert is one of those special events you don’t want to miss.  You know, just about a month ago, I was listening to Canadian radio.  They were interviewing a young classical guitarist from Canada and asking him who his biggest influences are, and he said, "Oh David Russell.  That guy is amazing."

Well, that’s who the Ann Arbor Symphony has playing with us on March 8th at the Michigan Theater!  He’ll be playing a Vivaldi Guitar Concerto and Rodrigo’s gorgeous Concierto de Aranjuez.

Plus, we have Peter Sparling Dance Company performing Peter’s new choreography to the "Three-Cornered Hat Suite."  To top it off, watch your A²SO play their hearts out on the relentlessly fast "Capriccio Espagnol" by Rimsky-Korsakov.

Order tickets now for this concert in our online ticketing system .

If you are a young professional (21-39), contact us now about participating in the Dead Composers Society event on March 8th.  We’ll start with a Salsa Dancing lesson at the City Center Building at 5:30, then we’ll move on to Salsarita’s for dinner at 6:30, and finally on to this concert at 8.  $27 covers the entire night!  Dance with the stars and then listen to them live on stage!  To get DCS tickets, go to our online ticketing system, select A²$O Bucks and select Dead Composers/DCS.

"Carnival of Animals is actually a carnival of local talent

Has a lion escaped from the zoo!?  No, this lion is just one of the many animals that will gather at the Michigan Theater on March 9th at 4 pm for Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s Family Concert: "The Carnival of the Animals".  We are pulling out all stops for this event.  I wrote about this concert last month, but I have to encourage you to try and attend this week.  Oh! And come dressed as your favorite animal or character from "Peter and the Wolf!"

First, when kids listen to Saint-Saen’s classic piece, they’ll be also listening to original poetry by Ann Arbor’s own teen talent trove: The Neutral Zone Slam Poets.  This promises to shake up any ideas you may have about classical music.  Furthermore, the "Carnival of the Animals" will have two teen prodigies at the two pianos required for the piece.  J (Jesse) Bennett of Ann Arbor and Stephanie Webb of Saline High School will be performing.  Believe me, they’re awesome—they won our piano competition after all!

Still not enough?  Try this.  Did you notice that "Peter and the Wolf" won an Oscar a week back? Well, we are performing it live on stage, and the only animation will be coming from the Ann Arbor Civic Theatre’s Junior Theatre troupe under the direction of our own former A²SO employee, Caitlin Frankel Rowe!

Here’s the kicker.  We’re doing a world premiere of "Stop, Drop and Listen", composed by Elizabeth Kelly, and I (Glenn) am performing the role of audience leader.  I’ll be there to encourage audience members to cough, sneeze, laugh, make cell phone calls and generally make a ruckus.  Should be fun.

As usual, we will have the "organized chaos" of drumming, petting zoos, crafts and performances starting in the lobby at 2:30.  Tickets are cheap: $12 for Adults and $5 for Kids.  Get your tickets in our online ticketing system.

Support the Arts in Michigan

On Wednesday, March 19, supporters of your Ann Arbor Symphony and other Washtenaw area arts organizations will gather in Lansing to show support for arts in Michigan. This is the second time we have taken part in this highly successful event, and we need the help of our patrons to speak about the importance of arts and culture to our State legislators.  It means more when it comes from you, our patrons.  Won’t you join us?

Complete information on the Arts and Culture Advocacy event in Lansing may be found at Art Serve Michigan's website: http://www.artservemichigan.org. Ann Arbor Arts Alliance is arranging for bus transportation to Lansing for this event. To take the $10 bus ride, contact Tamara Real of Arts Alliance at tamara@annarborchamber.org.

Hearts for the Arts beats strong

In this tough economic climate, it’s wonderful to see how generous our patrons can be!  The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra would like to thank all of the Corporate Sponsors, auction donors, volunteers and attendees of the recent Hearts for the Arts event at Travis Pointe Country Club on Saturday, February 9th.  The snow started falling in the middle of the event, but nothing could keep away the warm spirit of giving that was there.  This event, which supports the A²SO’s educational activities, is one of the primary sources of income for these programs.

What a wonderful venue and a great event.  We had a fine dinner of beef and seafood, and we even got to hear great music from Arie Lipsky and an ensemble of A²SO musicians.  There was great camaraderie and lots of time to look at silent auction items.  I overheard one guest, upon leaving, say to her friend, "That was really a lot of fun!"  What more can you ask for from a fundraising event?

We made a total of $46,655 on auction items and donations.  I have to say something about the donations portion of the evening.  In a five-minute period, auctioneer Steve Gross called out donation amounts and just let people hold up their bidding cards for whatever amount they wanted to donate.  In five minutes, we received nearly $9,000 in donations!

Yes, it may have been cold outside, but the generosity of our patrons warmed my heart.

Come at 11:30 for cocktails, then stay for the 12:15 luncheon and fashion show, featuring Ann Arbor luminaries in beautiful clothes.  To make a $50 reservation to attend, contact the A²SO office at 994-4801.
