JANUARY 2008
Here is the latest about what we are doing for Ward 57 at
Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
This is a grass-roots,
volunteer effort.
Each person who buys a
Tshirt, not only shows their support, but directly contributes to
items for the Ward, patients, family members and staff.
Deborah Semer (founder and author of this newsletter) spent the
holiday months in DC with her husband (a nurse on Ward 57), with
patients and others who live, work and breathe Walter Reed 24/7. "I'm telling you, it's one of the most intense places in
this country."
Three times a week fresh wounded come in from the
battlefield. The military staff are as embattled as the wounded
dealing with their own disabilities, lack of sleep, visits from the President, congresspeople, command & distressed moms and dads
from all over America. Amidst the problems, pain, life and death, honor,
duty, sacrifice, religion, politics and depression there is love hope and healing.
Veterans' affairs are all of our affairs..really.
I had the honor of meeting with the hospital commander, COL Patricia
Horoho and LTC Barabara Ryan and was truly encouraged by the leadership
they expressed and equally humbled by the
challenges they face. Read COL Horoho's Blog here
COL Horoho is
the first female commander of Walter Reed in
98 years!
