By Brandon Martin '98
Joining Foundation Director Marti Dupuis are Mike Bruns ‘82 (pictured lower left) and Joan Rackers Vanderfeltz ‘76 (lower right). Bruns takes the new position of Special Events Director while Vanderfeltz will work as Foundation Office Manager.
Bruns said, "I'm enjoying all the new challenges of my new position, but especially, the positive attitude of everyone here."
Adding to the positive comment by Bruns, Vanderfeltz said, "I hope to get all the alumni data aligned correctly so events can run more smoothly and alumni can stay better connected with one another and with Helias."
Alumni events in the works include happy hour socials, a clay pigeon shooting tournament, and even a Kentucky Derby. Bruns commented, "I hope to increase alumni relationships by reaching out past the Jefferson City community. I'm working on setting up events in St. Louis and Kansas City."

First Mission Trip of the Year
By Brandon Martin '98
It's hard to think of Helias today without thinking of mission trips. Even harder to get out of your mind is the image of a group of overjoyed students, thrilled to be bettering other communities as they deepen their own faith. The first mission trip of this school year took place from December 3-7, 2008, in Memphis, Tennessee. Though it wasn't a new town for Helias to serve on a mission trip, it was definitely a new and diversified mission. (Pictured above is Jon Aur '10 with St. John students.)
On Wednesday, December 3, 2008, Helias missionaries left for Memphis to serve the Catholic grade schools and St. Jude's Hospital. Twenty-four students, four chaperones, and one alumnus arrived in Memphis and unpacked to stay at the Poor Claire Nuns Monastery. (Pictured at right is Shelby Braun '10 with St. John students.)
Traditionally, Helias mission trips consist of days of hard work and evening prayer services. Thursday and Friday's work consisted of mentoring, teaching, and aiding teachers at St. John, Holy Names, and De La Salle at Blessed Sacrament, Catholic schools in Memphis.
Reflecting on her work was first-time mission tripper Brittney Henson ‘10, (pictured at left), who said, "The most enjoyable part of the trip was working with the kids in Memphis and mentoring them. And seeing how much they appreciated us." Adding to Henson's comments was another first-time mission tripper, Shelby Braun '10, who said, "I enjoyed working with the kids also. They taught me a lot. They taught me the value of who I am."
Weathering the cold, students worked Saturday at aid stations during the St. Jude's 5K and marathon. Helias students cheered on runners, (St. Jude's Heroes) as they handem them drinks, and helped with basic first aid.
St. Jude Hero, Madelene Schellman Wilson ‘75, was surprised to see Helias and said, "It meant a great deal to see the Helias students there working a spirit station...those last miles of the marathon are pretty lonely without a lot of crowd support, so I welcomed seeing them. What is even more important is that they volunteered at the Jubilee Schools where I also used to volunteer. It means so much for those students to have a mentor, even if only for a couple of days. I applaud Helias's efforts for making the trip and cheering us on." (Wilson is pictured here with her daughter.)
On Sunday, Helias attended Mass at Holy Names Catholic Church and reflected on their work before departing home.
While the first of five mission trips has been completed for the year, the memories of this mission for Helias students and Memphis citizens will be around for years to come.(Pictured below is entire mission trip group at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee.)
